Soissons is one of the oldest cities in France, intimately linked to the history of the first Frankish kings. It was here that Clovis defeated the last Roman general Syagrius in 486, founding the Kingdom of the Franks. The city is dominated by the majestic remains of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes Abbey, whose 13th-century twin-towered Gothic facade is one of the finest examples of monastic architecture in France. The Cathedral of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais, a masterpiece of early Gothic, rivals those of Laon and Reims for the purity of its lines. Soissons is also the gateway to the Chemin des Dames, a limestone ridge between the Aisne and Ailette valleys, theatre of some of the bloodiest battles of the First World War — the Nivelle Offensive of 1917 caused over 200,000 casualties in just a few weeks. The Caverne du Dragon, a former underground quarry turned museum, bears witness to the hell endured by the soldiers. The Aisne valley surrounding Soissons is a green haven of meadows, orchards and vineyards of southern Aisne producing a little-known but excellent champagne. A taxi from Lille provides comfortable access to this history-laden city without the complicated rail connections.

Route

Route Lille → Soissons

Your driver leaves Lille via the southern ring road and takes the A1 towards Paris. After crossing the Pas-de-Calais mining basin and its slag heaps, you pass Arras then Bapaume, former Somme battlefield. Near Peronne, you continue on the A26 towards Saint-Quentin, Picardy's textile capital and a remarkable Art Deco city with its imposing basilica. After Saint-Quentin, you take the RN2 southwards towards Laon. The landscape gradually changes: open plains give way to the wooded valleys of the Laonnois. You pass near Laon, whose cathedral perched on its butte is visible from afar. The descent to Soissons follows the green and peaceful Aisne valley. Soissons appears in the valley with the towers of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes dominating the town. Combined A1 and A26 tolls amount to approximately 14 euros. The journey takes 2h normally and can reach 2h35 on Friday evenings on the A1 between Lille and Arras.

Specific tips for the Lille → Soissons route

Saint-Jean-des-Vignes Abbey is Soissons' must-see monument: its Gothic facade is dazzling, especially at sunset. Site access is free, but the adjoining Arsenal museum offers interesting temporary exhibitions (5-8 euros). The Cathedral of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais also deserves a visit — its stained glass and south transept arm are remarkable. For the Chemin des Dames (20 km north of Soissons), allow half a day: the Caverne du Dragon (8 euros entry, 1h guided tour) is a moving memorial carved into the limestone. The Chemin des Dames plateau offers magnificent panoramas over the Aisne and Ailette valleys. In Soissons itself, the covered market (Wednesday and Saturday) is excellent for local produce: Soissons beans (IGP), Aisne champagne and Laonnois cheeses. Town centre restaurants offer generous Picard cuisine at reasonable prices. If visiting in summer, the 'Soissons en Lumieres' festival illuminates the monuments in the evening.
