Understanding taxi fares in France

Taxi fares in France are regulated by prefectural decree in each department. The cost of a ride depends on several factors: distance travelled, journey time, time of day (day or night), day of the week (weekday, Sunday, public holiday) and geographical zone. Since 2016, airport flat rates are mandatory for trips between Paris and CDG or Orly airports. TaxiNeo simplifies all of this by offering a guaranteed fixed price before booking, calculated based on official rates but without a meter or surprises.

Whether you are looking for a taxi fare in Paris, an airport flat rate or the price of a ride in your department, our detailed fare grids give you a reliable estimate. Also check our departments pages to find local coverage, or our practical guides to learn everything about taxi regulations in France.

Frequently asked questions

Why do two cities not show the same price per kilometre?

Because the cap is not national but departmental: a prefectoral order sets, for each department, the pick-up charge, the price per kilometre and the waiting hour, within the limits of the national order published each year. Two neighbouring towns in different departments can therefore show different amounts, without either driver being at fault.

What do the letters A, B, C and D on the meter mean?

They designate the four rates that apply depending on the hour, the day and the direction of the ride. A and B apply when the driver can expect a new passenger on the spot, C and D when they will return empty, which doubles the price per kilometre. The switch from one letter to another happens automatically during the ride, and the meter shows the current one.

Does a price shown on this site count as a quote?

No. The amounts published on our pages are estimates calculated from the regulated scales, and the price actually shown on the meter depends on the route taken, the traffic and the rate applying at the time. Only a fixed-price booking commits to an amount: it is then that amount, not the estimate, which counts.

Is the luggage supplement legal?

Yes, when the applicable prefectoral order provides for it and its amount is displayed in the vehicle. The first item placed in the boot remains free everywhere, and help loading it can never be charged. A supplement applied without display, or above the cap set by the order, is reported to the departmental directorate for the protection of populations.

Who checks the prices taxis charge?

The directorate general for competition, consumer affairs and fraud control checks fare displays, meter operation and the issuing of receipts, working with the prefectures that grant parking authorisations. A non-compliant meter or a fare above the departmental cap exposes the driver to an administrative penalty and a fine.

Is a taxi receipt compulsory?

It is as soon as the ride reaches twenty-five euros, and it must be handed over without the customer asking. Below that threshold it remains a right on request. The receipt states the date, the start and end times, the distance covered, the total amount and the driver's identification, all needed for any complaint.
