Cambrai is a city of art and history on the edge of the Cambrésis, a land of historic battles. It is world-famous for its Bêtises, mint sweets created 'by mistake' in the 19th century at the Afchain confectionery. But Cambrai also means Henri Matisse, born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis (20 km away), whose museum is France's third Matisse museum. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace, an 18th-century Baroque masterpiece, houses a Rubens entombment and the famous 'Martin and Martine' automaton that strikes the hours. Cambrai's citadel, built by Charles V, is one of the best-preserved in northern France. The town is also renowned for its andouillettes, awarded the prestigious AAAAA rating.
