Laon is one of northern France's most spectacular cities, a medieval hilltop town perched atop an outlier butte that dominates the Picardy plain by over 100 metres. This strategic position made it a stronghold since antiquity and the capital of the Carolingian kingdom under the dynasty's last kings. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Laon, a masterpiece of early Gothic art completed around 1230, is one of the oldest and most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in France. Its five towers — including two façade towers adorned with life-size sculpted oxen, a tribute to the animals that hauled the stones up the hill — create a unique and instantly recognisable silhouette. The interior, bathed in light through rose windows and an openwork triforium, influenced the construction of Notre-Dame de Paris and Chartres. The upper town, encircled by 7 kilometres of ramparts, contains exceptional heritage: the Templar Chapel (octagonal, 12th century), the Bishop's Palace, Saint-Martin Abbey, cobbled lanes and half-timbered houses. The Poma 2000, an automated cable car linking the station (lower town) to the upper town, is a unique facility in France that avoids the steep climb. Laon is an underrated cultural destination well worth the trip from Lille.

Route

Route Lille → Laon

From Lille, your driver takes the A26 motorway towards Cambrai. The A26 crosses the Artois plains, a landscape of large-scale farming and converted slag heaps. At Cambrai, you branch onto the A2 towards Saint-Quentin, then take the N2 towards Laon. The landscape gradually changes: after the cereal plains of the Vermandois, you enter the Laonnois, a region of wooded hills and green valleys. The first views of Laon are striking: the upper town appears like a stone vessel set upon its butte, dominated by the cathedral towers. Arrival is via the lower town, and your driver can drop you either at the station (from where the Poma rises to the upper town in 3 minutes) or directly in the upper town via the winding road that climbs the butte. Tolls on the A26 and A2 amount to approximately €14. The journey takes 1h50 normally and can reach 2h20 on busy days, particularly bank holiday weekends.

Specific tips for the Lille → Laon route

Take the Poma 2000 to ride from the station to the upper town — it is free, fast (3 min) and the experience is unique in France. This aerial cable-car mini-metro offers panoramic views over the plain. The upper town visit is done on foot in 3-4 hours: start with the cathedral (free, 1h — don't miss the sculpted oxen on the towers and the floor labyrinth), then the ramparts (full circuit: 1h30 walk with spectacular views), the Templar Chapel (guided visit, €3) and the citadel underground passages (guided visit, €6). The Art and Archaeology Museum (free) occupies the former Bishop's Palace and merits a visit. For lunch, the cathedral forecourt square offers several restaurants with terraces. The Saturday morning market in the upper town is lively and authentic. Laon is also an excellent base for visiting the Chemin des Dames, a Great War battlefield 20 km south (Dragon's Cave museum).

Detailed comparison of transport options

The TER Lille — Laon is not direct: you must go via Amiens or Saint-Quentin with one or two connections, for a journey of 2h30 to 3h30 costing around €30-40. It is long and impractical. Long-distance buses do not serve Laon directly. By car, expect €20 in fuel and €14 in tolls. The TaxiNeo taxi at €210 — €260 provides a direct door-to-door transfer in 1h50, with no connections. For 3-4 passengers, the cost (€53-87 per person) is justified by the considerable time saving and comfort. The taxi can moreover drop you directly in the upper town, which the train cannot.
