Reims is one of France's great historic cities, inseparably linked to two symbols: the Notre-Dame Cathedral, a masterpiece of Rayonnant Gothic where 33 kings of France were crowned from Clovis to Charles X, and Champagne, of which Reims is the world capital with its prestigious houses — Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger, Pommery, Ruinart, Mumm — and their cellars carved into the Champagne chalk, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reims Cathedral, with its façade adorned with 2,303 statues including the famous Smiling Angel, is a jewel of architecture and sculpture. The Palace of Tau, former residence of the archbishops adjoining the cathedral, and the Basilica of Saint-Remi, a Romanesque and Gothic masterpiece housing the tomb of Saint Remi who baptised Clovis, complete a monumental ensemble inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Reims, like Saint-Quentin, was largely rebuilt in Art Deco style after the destruction of 1914-18, and the Carnegie Library, the covered market and numerous centre-city façades bear witness to this architectural rebirth. The city is also a gastronomic hub — the pink Reims biscuits, Rethel white pudding and of course food-and-Champagne pairings are essential experiences.

Route

Route Lille → Reims

From Lille, your driver takes the A26 southbound. The motorway first crosses the Artois and the mining basin of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, then the Cambrésis with its vast agricultural horizons. After Saint-Quentin, you enter Champagne — the landscape gradually transforms: the wheat and sugar beet fields of the chalky Champagne stretch as far as the eye can see, immense and gently rolling. The first Champagne vineyards appear some thirty kilometres before Reims, on the slopes of the Montagne de Reims. Arrival in Reims is from the north, with a progressive view of the cathedral towers dominating the city. Your driver drops you in the city centre, near the cathedral, the Champagne houses or at your chosen address. Tolls on the A26 between Lille and Reims amount to approximately €18. The journey takes 2h10 normally and can reach 2h40 on busy weekends, particularly during the grape harvest (September-October) or Champagne festivals.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Lille → Reims route

Visiting a Champagne cellar is essential. Book in advance, especially in summer: Veuve Clicquot (€25-65, chalk cellars, exceptional premium tour), Taittinger (€20-45, cellars in former Roman chalk pits), Pommery (€25-50, spectacular Art Deco cellars), Ruinart (€45-90, the oldest house, UNESCO cellars). The cathedral is free — allow 1h for the interior and stained glass (including Chagall's in the axial chapel). The Palace of Tau (€8) displays the coronation treasure. The Basilica of Saint-Remi (free), older and more intimate, is an often-overlooked gem. The Art Deco quarter can be walked in 1h30 (map from the tourist office). For lunch, Place d'Erlon has many brasseries, but the best tables are on Rue de Mars and around the Halles du Boulingrin (Art Deco market). Pink Reims biscuits (Maison Fossier) are traditionally dipped in Champagne. The Montagne de Reims (20 km) offers superb walks through the vineyards.

Detailed comparison of transport options

The TGV Lille — Reims (via Champagne-Ardenne TGV) costs €30-70 and takes about 1h30, but the TGV Champagne-Ardenne station is in Bezannes, 10 km from Reims city centre — you need a tram or local taxi to reach the cathedral. No direct TER exists; you must go via Paris or Saint-Quentin with connections (3h+). FlixBus offers tickets from €15 but takes 3h30 to 4h. The TaxiNeo taxi at €250 — €310 provides a direct door-to-door transfer in 2h10, drop-off right in the city centre outside the cathedral or directly at your chosen Champagne house.
