Amiens is a city that surprises with the richness of its heritage. Its Notre-Dame Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is quite simply the largest Gothic cathedral in France — it could contain two Notre-Dame de Paris cathedrals. With its 145-metre length, 42-metre vault height and façade adorned with over 1,000 medieval sculptures, it is an absolute masterpiece of Gothic art. In summer and December, a light show called 'Chroma' illuminates the façade with its original medieval colours — a magical moment. The hortillonnages are Amiens' other treasure: 300 hectares of floating gardens in the heart of the city, criss-crossed by canals ('rieux') navigated by traditional horn-shaped boats. These market gardens, cultivated since Gallo-Roman times, still supply the floating market held every Saturday morning in the Saint-Leu quarter. This medieval district, threaded by branches of the Somme, is the living heart of Amiens: half-timbered houses, waterside restaurants, antique shops and artisans. Amiens is also the city of Jules Verne, who lived there for 34 years and wrote his greatest novels there. His house, now a museum, can be visited at 2 Rue Charles-Dubois. Amiens' municipal circus, one of France's rare permanent circus buildings, and the Perret Tower, Western Europe's first skyscraper (1952, 110 metres), complete a fascinating urban heritage.

Route

Route Lille → Amiens

Your driver leaves Lille via the A1 towards Paris. The motorway first crosses the Artois and mining basin, then enters Picardy — the landscape opens onto vast agricultural plains punctuated by gentle valleys. You pass near Arras and Bapaume, Great War battleground (the Australian memorial at Pozières is visible from the motorway). After the Bapaume exit, you branch onto the A29 towards Amiens. Arrival in Amiens is from the north, with a view of the cathedral spire dominating the Somme plain. Tolls on the A1 and A29 amount to approximately €10. The journey takes 1h20 normally and can reach 1h45 on Friday afternoons (flow towards Paris) or on busy Amiens market days.

Specific tips for the Lille → Amiens route

The cathedral is free and open daily. The 'Chroma' show (medieval colour illumination of the façade) runs in summer (June-September, 10:30pm) and December — an absolute must-see. The hortillonnages boat tour (€7, 45 min) departs from the towpath, a 10-minute walk from the cathedral. The floating market takes place on Saturday mornings (6am-1pm) in the Saint-Leu quarter: market gardeners arrive by boat and sell their vegetables on the quays — a unique spectacle in France. The Saint-Leu quarter is packed with restaurants (Le Bouchon, Les Marissons) for waterside lunches. Jules Verne's house (€8) is a fascinating visit, with reconstructions of his study and inventions. The Amiens Christmas Market (December) is the largest in northern France after Strasbourg, with 130 chalets and the illuminated cathedral as backdrop.

Detailed comparison of transport options

The TER Lille — Amiens costs €22 and takes 1h30 to 2h with a change at Arras or Longueau. Frequency is average (one train every 1-2 hours). By car, expect €12 in fuel and €10 in tolls. The TaxiNeo taxi at €150 — €190 provides direct door-to-door service with no connections. For 3-4 passengers, the cost (€38-63 per person) is competitive against the train, especially avoiding the fatigue of changing at Arras. A taxi is essential for the hortillonnages and Jules Verne's house, poorly served by city buses.
