The Château de Chambord is the largest and most spectacular of all the Loire châteaux. Commissioned by Francis I in 1519, this French Renaissance masterpiece comprises 440 rooms, 365 fireplaces and 84 staircases, including the famous double helix staircase attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. The Chambord estate covers 5,440 hectares — the size of inner Paris — enclosed by a 32 km wall. This national hunting domain is the largest enclosed park in Europe. The journey from Tours crosses the Touraine Beauce plain then the Sologne, a land of forests and ponds. Chambord welcomes over 900,000 visitors annually and offers varied activities: equestrian shows, boat rides on the canal, wildlife watching (deer, wild boar) and the recently restored formal French gardens.
Route
Route Tours → Chambord
From Tours, take the A10 motorway towards Paris to the Blois exit (exit 17). Cross Blois southward via the D956 then the D33 which leads directly to the Chambord estate through the Sologne forest. Entry to the estate is free; only the château requires a ticket. Alternatively, the route via Amboise then Chaumont-sur-Loire (D952) follows the Loire and allows combining several visits, but adds 30 minutes. The arrival at Chambord is always breathtaking: the château appears suddenly at the end of a long forest-lined avenue, reflected in the Cosson canal. Parking is free and a 5-minute walk from the château.
