The Château de Chenonceau is arguably the most elegant of all the Loire châteaux. Nicknamed the 'Ladies' Château' because it was successively embellished by Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici, it gracefully spans the River Cher with its two-storey gallery. The second most visited château in France after Versailles, Chenonceau welcomes over 850,000 visitors annually. The journey from Tours crosses the Touraine countryside through vineyards and forests. The gardens of Diane and Catherine are exceptionally beautiful, especially in spring when the flower beds bloom. The château also houses a remarkable collection of Old Master paintings, including works by Rubens, Primaticcio and Van Loo. The château's floral workshop renews the flower arrangements in every room each week.

Route

Route Tours → Chenonceau

From Tours, head southeast on the D976 towards Bléré. This road crosses the Larçay forest and the rolling Touraine countryside. At Bléré, follow the D40 to Chenonceau (note: the village is spelled Chenonceaux with an x, the château without). Parking at the château is free and spacious. Alternatively, you can go via Amboise then head south on the D81, combining two visits. The landscape is charming throughout: small villages of white tuffeau stone, Touraine appellation vineyards and apple orchards. The approach via the D40 offers a striking first view of the château through the avenue of plane trees.
