The Château de Villandry is world-renowned for its Renaissance gardens, the most remarkable in France. The last of the great Loire châteaux built during the Renaissance, it was erected around 1536 by Jean Le Breton, Secretary of State to Francis I. But it is the gardens that have earned its international fame: a 12,500 m² decorative vegetable garden arranged in nine geometric squares where vegetables and flowers create living paintings, an ornamental garden with clipped box hedges symbolising types of love (tender, passionate, fickle, tragic), a water garden with a Louis XV mirror-shaped basin, and a sun garden in warm tones. Restored from 1906 by Joachim Carvallo, great-grandfather of the current owners, the gardens welcome 350,000 visitors annually. The château overlooks the confluence of the Loire and Cher rivers, offering exceptional views from the keep's belvedere.

Detailed comparison of transport options
There is no train station in Villandry. The Rémi bus serves the village very irregularly (2-3 per day on weekdays). By taxi from Tours, you are dropped directly at the château entrance in 20 minutes. It is the most practical transport, especially for combining Villandry with Azay-le-Rideau or Langeais in the same half-day. Cycling from Tours (15 km via the Loire à Vélo route) is feasible but tiring with children.
