The Château d'Azay-le-Rideau is one of the first French Renaissance châteaux, built between 1518 and 1527 by financier Gilles Berthelot. Constructed on an island in the River Indre, it appears to float on the water, creating a perfect reflection that makes it one of France's most photographed châteaux. Honoré de Balzac described it as 'a diamond cut in facets, set by the Indre'. State-owned since 1905 and managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, the château underwent a masterful restoration completed in 2017 that restored its slate roofs and Renaissance interiors. The 8-hectare English-style park, planted with rare species (sequoias, cedars of Lebanon), offers bucolic walks along the Indre. The village of Azay-le-Rideau itself deserves a stroll for its old houses and Wednesday market.

From Tours, take the D751 westward towards Chinon. After passing through Joué-lès-Tours and Ballan-Miré, turn onto the D57 towards Azay-le-Rideau. The route crosses typically Touraine rolling countryside, between sunflower fields and Chinon appellation vineyards. You arrive at the village via the main street leading directly to the château car park. Alternatively, a picturesque route follows the Indre via the D17 from Montbazon, passing through the Villaines forest and the village of Saché where Balzac stayed with his friends the Margonnes.
