Chinon is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the Loire Valley. Its royal fortress, perched on a rocky spur overlooking the River Vienne, is the historic site where Joan of Arc recognised Charles VII in 1429, a founding episode in French history. The lower town offers a maze of medieval lanes lined with half-timbered houses and troglodyte cellars carved into the tuffeau limestone. Chinon is also the homeland of François Rabelais, born at La Devinière nearby, and its vineyards produce one of the finest Loire reds, Chinon, from the Cabernet Franc grape. The caves of Old Chinon, carved into the cliff face, harbour millions of bottles ageing gracefully. The Chinon market, Thursday mornings on Place Jeanne d'Arc, is one of the most renowned in Touraine. Each summer the town hosts a costumed medieval market that attracts thousands of visitors.
Route
Route Tours → Chinon
From Tours, the route follows the D751 westward, along the south bank of the Loire then the Vienne. You will pass through Joué-lès-Tours, Villandry (possible stop), then Azay-le-Rideau before reaching the Indre valley. The road continues through Cheillé and the Chinon appellation vineyards before arriving at the medieval city. The approach to Chinon is spectacular: the fortress appears suddenly above the Vienne. The driver can drop you at the château car park (at the top) or in the historic centre. A lift carved into the rock connects the lower town to the fortress. The landscape alternates between vineyards, forests and white tuffeau stone villages.

Specific tips for the Tours → Chinon route
Visit the fortress in the morning (opens 9:30am, entry €10.50) for panoramic views over the Vienne and Chinon's rooftops. The included Histopad offers a fascinating 3D reconstruction of the royal apartments. In the afternoon, explore Old Chinon's lanes and visit the troglodyte cellars. Wine lovers should try the Maison de la Rivière for tastings of red, white and rosé Chinon. Couly-Dutheil and Domaine Charles Joguet are among the top producers. La Devinière (Rabelais' birthplace, 8 km) deserves a detour. Restaurants along Quai Jeanne d'Arc offer riverside terraces. In August, the medieval market is unmissable.
