Dole is a town of character with 25,000 inhabitants, former capital of Franche-Comté before Louis XIV replaced it with Besançon in 1678. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Doubs and the Rhine-Rhône canal, it unfolds a magnificent historic centre of golden-stone Renaissance houses, dominated by the imposing 16th-century Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame whose 73-metre bell tower is visible for kilometres. But Dole is best known as the birthplace of Louis Pasteur, born on 27 December 1822 in the family home on Rue des Tanneurs, beside the Tanners' Canal. This house, now a museum, traces the life and discoveries of the father of microbiology and vaccination. The Tanners' Quarter, with its wooden-balconied houses overlooking the canal, is one of the most picturesque in Franche-Comté. Dole is also an important railway junction between Paris, Dijon and Switzerland (Dole-Ville TGV station). Taxis from Dijon are used by TGV connecting passengers, tourists visiting Franche-Comté heritage and outdoor enthusiasts heading to the nearby Forest of Chaux.
Route
Route Dijon → Dole
From Dijon, your driver takes the A39, a toll motorway opened in 1998, towards Bourg-en-Bresse. You leave Dijon heading southeast through the Dijon-Sud business zone, then quickly enter the Saône plain, an agricultural landscape of large-scale crops (wheat, maize, rapeseed) dotted with isolated farms and oak copses. The road is generally very clear, as the A39 is less busy than the A6 or A31. After about 45 km, you take the Dole-Centre exit. The descent towards Dole reveals the town perched on its hill with the collegiate church bell tower dominating the panorama. Arrival in the town centre is via Avenue de Genève, which leads directly to Place Grévy and the historic heart. The journey takes 40 minutes in normal conditions. The toll is about €4, included in the fare.
