Besançon is one of France's most beautiful fortified cities, historic capital of Franche-Comté and prefecture of the Doubs. Enclosed within an almost perfect meander of the Doubs forming a loop 250 metres in diameter, the old town is dominated by the formidable Vauban Citadel, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 as part of Vauban's fortifications. This 11-hectare citadel, built between 1668 and 1683, is Franche-Comté's most visited monument with 280,000 visitors a year: it houses three museums, a zoo, an insectarium, an aquarium and a noctarium. Besançon is also France's watchmaking capital since the 18th century: the Time Museum, housed in the Granvelle Palace, traces this centuries-old tradition. The city was the birthplace of Victor Hugo (1802) and the Lumière brothers (1862 and 1864). Taxis from Dijon are popular with tourists visiting the citadel, business travellers, academics (Besançon has 30,000 students) and winter sports enthusiasts heading to Jura ski resorts.
Route
Route Dijon → Besançon
From Dijon, your driver takes the A39 southeast towards Dole, then branches onto the A36, nicknamed La Comtoise, towards Besançon-Mulhouse. The landscape gradually changes: the Burgundy plain gives way to the first Jura foothills, with fir forests and rolling meadows typical of Franche-Comté. You pass near Dole (visible from the motorway with its distinctive bell tower) before continuing east into the Doubs valley. The arrival in Besançon is spectacular: the city appears in its Doubs loop, dominated by the citadel perched 100 metres above the river. You leave the motorway at the Besançon-Centre exit and descend towards the old town via the Faubourg Rivotte or the Rue de la République. The entire journey takes 1h05 in normal conditions. Tolls total about €7, included in the fare.

The Vauban Citadel is unmissable: allow 3 to 4 hours for the full visit (museums, zoo, aquarium, panoramas). Adult entry: €12.50. The walk up from the centre (15 min, steep) is part of the experience, or a small shuttle bus runs in summer. The Grande Rue, the old town's main artery, is lined with Renaissance townhouses and shops. The Time Museum (Granvelle Palace, free) is fascinating for watchmaking enthusiasts. The Quai Vauban along the Doubs is the ideal spot for a stroll or terrace dining. Besançon market (Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, Place de la Révolution) offers comté, cancoillotte, Montbéliard and Morteau sausages, and Jura wines. For hikers, the Doubs trail (GR59) offers superb walks along the river.
