Beaune is universally recognised as the wine capital of Burgundy. This medieval town of 22,000 inhabitants, enclosed by perfectly preserved 13th-century ramparts, is home to one of France's most visited monuments: the Hospices de Beaune, or Hôtel-Dieu, founded in 1443 by Chancellor Nicolas Rolin. Its polychrome glazed tile roofs with geometric patterns — yellow, green, red and black diamonds — have become the symbol of all Burgundy. Every third Sunday of November, the Hospices de Beaune wine auction is the most prestigious wine event in the world, attracting dealers and collectors from across the globe. Beyond the Hospices, Beaune is packed with cellars and wine merchants — Bouchard Père & Fils, Joseph Drouhin, Louis Jadot, Patriarche — where you can taste the finest Côte de Beaune wines: Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Corton-Charlemagne. Taxis from Dijon are popular with wine tourists arriving by TGV at Dijon-Ville station, tasting groups and visitors to the Hospices.
Route
Route Dijon → Beaune
From Dijon, your driver can take two routes. The fastest is the A31 motorway towards Lyon: you leave Dijon heading south, pass the Dijon-Sud toll and drive through the Burgundy plain to the Beaune-Centre exit in 30-35 minutes. The toll is about €3, included in the fare. The alternative, 15 minutes longer but infinitely more beautiful, is the D122, known as the Route des Grands Crus: it winds through the heart of the world's most prestigious vineyards. You pass through Marsannay-la-Côte, Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin (village of the 'king of wines'), Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Clos de Vougeot (imposing 12th-century château surrounded by 50 hectares of vines), Vosne-Romanée (home of the mythical Romanée-Conti, the world's most expensive wine), Nuits-Saint-Georges, then Aloxe-Corton and Pommard before reaching Beaune. In autumn, the golden vines offer a stunning spectacle.

Specific tips for the Dijon → Beaune route
Ask your driver to take the Route des Grands Crus (D122) if you have 15 extra minutes — the detour is well worth it. The Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu) takes 1 to 1.5 hours to visit, entry €8.50. The wine auction (3rd Sunday of November) is a unique event, but the town is packed: book your taxi well in advance. For tastings, the Marché aux Vins (in a former church, €11 for 10 wines) is a great introduction. The Patriarche cellar, Burgundy's largest (5 km of galleries), is a memorable experience. Beaune market (Saturday mornings, Place de la Halle) offers cheeses (Époisses, Cîteaux), Dijon mustard and gingerbread. The rampart walk takes 40 minutes. Beaune is very compact: the entire centre is walkable.
