Draguignan, former prefecture of the Var until 1974, is a characterful town nestled at the foot of the Maures massif, at the junction between Provence Verte and the Côte d'Azur. A dynamic sub-prefecture of 40,000 inhabitants, it boasts a remarkable medieval historic centre with its Clock Tower (19th century on a medieval base), cobbled lanes bordered by houses with colourful facades and shaded little squares under plane trees. The Pierre de la Fée dolmen, a 2,500 BC megalithic monument located right in the city centre, is one of Provence's finest and best-preserved. Draguignan houses the Artillery Museum, France's largest military museum after Les Invalides, set in the former Bonaparte barracks. The Pennafort gorges, 10 km north, offer spectacular waterfalls and natural pools in a tufa canyon. The town is surrounded by vineyards (AOC Côtes de Provence) and centuries-old olive groves. The Wednesday and Saturday morning Provençal market fills the centre streets with local produce stalls. Draguignan is also the ideal base for exploring the Verdon Gorges (50 km), Bargemon, Tourtour (the 'village in the sky') and Aups (truffle capital of the Var).

Route

Route Marseille → Draguignan

Departing Marseille, your driver takes the A8 (La Provençale motorway) towards Nice. The motorway crosses the Var hinterland passing through Aubagne, Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (the basilica reportedly houses Mary Magdalene's skull) and Brignoles (former summer residence of the Counts of Provence). The Le Muy exit gives access to the D555 which climbs to Draguignan through the central Var wine-growing hills. Arrival in Draguignan is from the south, passing through the Trans-en-Provence commercial zone before reaching the historic town centre. A8 tolls total approximately €10. The journey takes 1h20 under normal conditions, potentially extending to 1h45 on summer Friday evenings (Côte d'Azur departures) and during the Sainte-Barbe festival (mid-December).

Specific tips for the Marseille → Draguignan route

To visit Draguignan's historic centre, ask to be dropped at Place du Marché or Place aux Herbes, the old town's heart. The Pierre de la Fée dolmen is a 10-minute walk from the centre (Avenue de Montferrat). The Pennafort gorges are 15 minutes by car (D25 towards Callas) — ask your driver for a detour with a small supplement. For wine lovers, the Côtes de Provence wine route crosses the Draguignan countryside: Château Sainte-Roseline (2 km) and Château des Demoiselles estates are recommended. The Saturday morning market is the liveliest. For a Verdon Gorges excursion (Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, 50 km), Draguignan is an excellent starting point — opt for the hourly hire option.
