Fréjus, founded by Julius Caesar in 49 BC under the name Forum Julii, is one of the oldest Roman cities in Gaul. Its exceptional ancient heritage includes a Roman amphitheatre (one of France's oldest, seating 10,000 spectators), an aqueduct with surviving imposing arches, remains of the ancient port (the second Roman military port after Ostia) and a Roman theatre. The Fréjus episcopal group (cathedral, baptistery, cloister), dating from the 5th to 13th centuries, is one of France's best-preserved early Christian ensembles. Fréjus is also the gateway to the Estérel massif, a geological wonder of red porphyry rocks plunging into the turquoise Mediterranean. The fine sand beaches of Fréjus-Plage and Saint-Aygulf, the Estérel calanques (Petit Caneiret cove, Maubois inlet) and the Base Nature François Léotard (135 hectares of preserved coastal nature) offer an exceptional seaside setting. Saint-Raphaël, Fréjus's twin city, complements the offer with its marina, Belle Époque villas and underwater archaeological museum. The city hosts an annual comic book festival and the Nuits Auréliennes (performances in the amphitheatre).

Route

Route Marseille → Fréjus

Departing Marseille, your driver takes the A50 towards Toulon, then quickly joins the A8 (La Provençale motorway) towards Nice. The motorway crosses the Var hinterland hills passing through Aubagne (Marcel Pagnol country), Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume and Brignoles. After the Le Muy exit, the road descends towards the coast through the first foothills of the Estérel. Arrival in Fréjus is via the Fréjus/Saint-Raphaël exit. To reach Fréjus-Plage or Saint-Raphaël, your driver continues a few kilometres on the D37. A8 tolls total approximately €12. The journey takes 1h25 under normal conditions but can reach 1h55 on Friday evenings in summer and during major holiday departure weekends towards the Côte d'Azur. Sunday evening returns are also busy.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Marseille → Fréjus route

To discover the Roman heritage, ask to be dropped at Fréjus historic centre (Place Formigé), from where the amphitheatre, cloister and cathedral are accessible on foot. The amphitheatre visit is free (paid for performances). For beaches, Fréjus-Plage offers 3 km of fine sand while the Estérel calanques (accessible via the Corniche d'Or D559 between Fréjus and Cannes) are wilder. In summer, the Base Nature François Léotard is ideal for families (free access, trails, beaches, kitesurfing). If you wish to tour the Estérel by car, the coastal road (D559, Corniche d'Or) between Saint-Raphaël and La Napoule is one of France's most beautiful coastal drives — ask your driver for this variant. For gastronomy, restaurants at Saint-Raphaël port and Fréjus' Place aux Aires offer excellent fish and seafood.
