Hyères is the Côte d'Azur's oldest seaside resort, frequented since the 18th century by British aristocracy for its exceptional climate. The town is best known as the boarding point for the Golden Islands: Porquerolles (white sand beaches and Caribbean-like waters), Port-Cros (national marine park, diving paradise) and Le Levant. The Giens Peninsula, connected to the mainland by a double tombolo unique in Europe, offers lunar landscapes and wild beaches. Hyères also charms with its perched medieval centre, salt flats populated by pink flamingos and centuries-old palm trees earning it the nickname 'Hyères-les-Palmiers'.
Route
Route Marseille → Hyères
From Marseille, take the A50 towards Toulon. Bypass Toulon via the A57 (Toulon tunnel, free) then take the A570 towards Hyères. The Hyères-Centre exit puts you 5 minutes from the town centre. For Tour Fondue (Porquerolles jetty), continue on the D97 to the Giens Peninsula (15 extra minutes). The route crosses varied Provençal coastal landscapes: vineyards, pine forests and salt flats. Combined A50+A570 tolls amount to about €8.

Specific tips for the Marseille → Hyères route
If taking the boat to Porquerolles, book your crossing online (TLV or Hyères Bateau) as boats sell out in summer. The driver drops you at Tour Fondue, the main jetty. The crossing takes 15-20 minutes. Arrive 30 minutes before boat departure. The return can be on a later boat: book your return taxi for the arrival time at Tour Fondue. Tour Fondue parking is paid (€15/day) and often full: another argument for a taxi!
