Compiègne is a royal and imperial city nestled between the Oise river and one of France's largest forests — 14,500 hectares of oak, beech and hornbeam that formed the favourite hunting grounds of French sovereigns. The Palace of Compiègne, one of three great royal residences alongside Versailles and Fontainebleau, is a grandiose monument remodelled by Louis XV then by Napoleon I and Napoleon III. Empress Eugénie organised the famous 'Compiègne Series' here, lavish receptions gathering the European elite. The palace now houses three museums: the Historic Apartments (sumptuous Empire furniture), the Second Empire Museum (paintings, sculptures and art objects) and the National Museum of Carriages and Tourism (a unique collection of royal coaches, carriages and early automobiles). But Compiègne is also marked by History with a capital H: the Rethondes Clearing in the Forest of Compiègne is where the Armistice of 11 November 1918 was signed, ending the First World War. A museum wagon, a replica of Marshal Foch's wagon, occupies the exact spot of the signing. It was also in this same clearing that Hitler imposed the armistice on France on 22 June 1940, in a sinister historical symmetry. The forest itself offers exceptional walks: the Beaux Monts, a 4 km bridle path laid out for Napoleon, offers a unique perspective on the palace.

Route

Route Lille → Compiègne

From Lille, your driver takes the A1, the famous Northern Motorway, towards Paris. The A1 first crosses the Scarpe plain and the mining basin, then the Artois with its wheat and sugar beet fields stretching to the horizon. After the Arras exit, the landscape becomes more rolling as you enter Picardy. You pass Péronne, Roye and the Santerre plateau, prosperous farmland. The Compiègne Sud exit (exit 10) comes after approximately 170 km. Entry into Compiègne is via the left bank of the Oise, with a view of the town's rooftops dominated by the Flamboyant Gothic Town Hall and the majestic forest trees in the background. Your driver drops you in the town centre, outside the Palace or at your chosen address. Tolls on the A1 between Lille and Compiègne amount to approximately €15. The journey takes 1h45 normally and can reach 2h15 on Friday evenings and holiday departure days, as the A1 is the busiest motorway in France.

Specific tips for the Lille → Compiègne route

The Palace of Compiègne merits half a day: the Historic Apartments (€11) are magnificently furnished (Empire, Second Empire style), and the Carriage Museum (included in the ticket) is fascinating even for non-specialists — the royal coaches, early Panhard-Levassor automobiles and Tsarist sleighs are spectacular. The Armistice Clearing (6 km into the forest, free access, museum €7) is a moving memorial site — the museum wagon, monuments and commemorative stones form a solemn ensemble. The Forest of Compiègne is ideal for hiking: the Beaux Monts (4 km return, imperial perspective on the palace), Mont Saint-Marc (highest point, view over the Aisne valley) and the Saint-Pierre ponds are the finest routes. The historic town centre, with its pedestrian streets, townhouses and restaurants along the Oise, offers a pleasant lunch setting. Pierrefonds Castle (14 km), a medieval fortress fantastically restored by Viollet-le-Duc for Napoleon III, is an unmissable detour — it is France's most photographed fairy-tale castle.
