Limoux is a charming small town in the Aude, world-famous for two treasures: Blanquette de Limoux, the oldest sparkling wine in the world (documented since 1531, well before champagne), and its carnival, the longest in the world (January to March, every weekend). Blanquette, made from the mauzac grape using the ancestral method, is a local pride: the Sieur d'Arques, Antech and Robert cellars produce sparkling wines of remarkable finesse. The Limoux carnival is unique: every weekend for three months, carnival bands parade through the Place de la Republique, masked and costumed, to the sound of brass bands, in a convivial and popular atmosphere nothing like the major media-friendly carnivals. The town itself is charming: the banks of the Aude, the medieval Pont Neuf, the half-timbered houses of the Place de la Republique, the lanes of the old centre. Limoux is also the gateway to the upper Aude valley, a wild and preserved territory rising towards the Pyrenean ski resorts of the Aude (Ax-les-Thermes, les Angles). The Abbey of Saint-Hilaire (7 km), historic birthplace of Blanquette, and Puivert Castle (30 km), a perched Cathar fortress, round out the region's attractions.

Route

Route Toulouse → Limoux

From Toulouse, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A61 (Autoroute des Deux Mers) towards Carcassonne. After crossing the Lauragais wheat fields, you exit at Carcassonne-Ouest to take the D118 south. This departmental road follows the Aude valley heading south, crossing a landscape of vineyards (AOC Limoux) on the limestone hillsides of the Aude. Mauzac, chardonnay and chenin vines are terraced on the gentle slopes framing the river. You pass through Pomas and Pieusse before arriving in Limoux from the north. The arrival offers a charming view of the town rooftops and the bridge spanning the Aude. A61 tolls on this section amount to approximately €8. The journey takes 1h10 under normal conditions. Note: during carnival (January-March, weekends), town centre streets may be closed to traffic — the driver adjusts the drop-off point.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Toulouse → Limoux route

Tasting Blanquette de Limoux is a must. The Sieur d'Arques cellar (cooperative, the largest) and Maison Antech (family-run since 1874) offer visits and tastings. Also ask for Cremant de Limoux (drier, chardonnay-based) and the still red AOC Limoux wine. During carnival (January to March, every weekend), the atmosphere on the Place de la Republique is unique: convivial, popular, far from spectacle carnivals. The best time is Sunday afternoon. The Abbey of Saint-Hilaire (7 km, 10 min) is a Romanesque gem: this is where Benedictine monks supposedly 'invented' Blanquette in the 16th century. Puivert Castle (30 km, 35 min), a Cathar fortress by a lake, makes a magnificent excursion. The Limoux market (Friday morning) is authentic and untouristy. Recommended restaurant: la Maison de la Blanquette, on the Place de la Republique, for local cuisine paired with sparkling wine.

Tolls: ~8 € de péages (A61)
