Foix is a characterful small prefecture, dominated by the three spectacular towers of its medieval castle, former residence of the powerful Counts of Foix. This fortress, which resisted Simon de Montfort during the Albigensian Crusade, is one of the symbols of Cathar country. The town nestles at the confluence of the Ariège and Arget rivers, gateway to the Ariège Pyrenees. Ariège is a département of extraordinary caves: the Mas-d'Azil cave (a road passes through it!), the Niaux cave (14,000-year-old cave paintings) and the underground river of Labouiche. Foix is also the ideal starting point for Montségur castle, the last Cathar stronghold.
Route
Route Toulouse → Foix
From Toulouse, take the A66 (L'Ariégeoise), an extension of the A61. This recent motorway heads due south towards the Pyrenees. After Pamiers (former capital of the County of Foix), the Foix-Nord exit puts you 5 minutes from the town centre. The landscape gradually changes: the Toulouse plain gives way to the first Pyrenean foothills, with snow-capped peaks visible in the distance on clear days. The journey is fast and smooth, the A66 being uncrowded outside ski weekends.

Specific tips for the Toulouse → Foix route
Foix Castle is open year-round (except January): the view from the towers over the Pyrenees chain is exceptional in clear weather. If continuing to the Niaux caves, allow 30 extra minutes from Foix (booking required). Foix market (Friday morning) is authentic and untouristy. In winter, Ariège ski resorts (Ax 3 Domaines, Les Monts d'Olmes) are accessible from Foix in 45 minutes. Bring warm clothes: Foix is 3-4°C cooler than Toulouse.
