The taxi from Cluses to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is a journey through the alpine heart of Haute-Savoie, connecting two complementary poles of the Arve valley. Cluses is an energetic industrial town and the gateway to the Grand Massif ski area (Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns, Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval) with 265 km of pistes. Flaine, designed by Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer in the 1960s, is famous for its unique brutalist mountain architecture. The route to Chamonix passes through Sallanches with its mythical Mont-Blanc panorama and Passy with the remarkable Plateau d'Assy sacred art church. Chamonix, birthplace of mountaineering since the first Mont-Blanc ascent in 1786, remains one of the world's most prestigious mountain destinations, dominated by the 4,808-metre summit and the iconic Aiguille du Midi cable car.

Route

Route Cluses → Chamonix

From Cluses, a short stretch on the A40 leads to the Sallanches-Passy exit, where you join the Route Blanche N205 climbing the upper Arve valley. The road passes through Sallanches with its grand Mont-Blanc backdrop, then Passy stretching from the valley floor to the Plateau d'Assy. After the glacial lock at Servoz above the impressive Diosaz gorges, you reach Les Houches, the first village of the Chamonix valley. The entry into Chamonix is spectacular: the Aiguille du Midi rises to 3,842 m before you while Mont-Blanc dominates the horizon at 4,808 m. The driver drops you in central Chamonix, at the Aiguille du Midi base, your hotel or directly at the ski lifts of your choice.

Specific tips for the Cluses → Chamonix route

This route is the ideal transfer for travellers wanting to combine two legendary ski areas: the Grand Massif from Cluses and the Chamonix valley. In winter, the N205 between Sallanches and Chamonix is regularly cleared but can be icy early morning or late afternoon — our vehicles carry winter tyres and our drivers know this road perfectly. On Saturday changeover days, traffic between Sallanches and Les Houches can be very heavy — depart before 8am or after 2pm. At Chamonix, the Aiguille du Midi cable car (€65 return) should be booked online as slots are limited, especially in summer.
