Sète, nicknamed the 'singular island' by Paul Valéry who was born there in 1871, is a unique Mediterranean port city. Built on and around Mont Saint-Clair (175 m), it is flanked by the sea on one side and the Thau lagoon on the other, giving it a uniquely insular atmosphere. The city is world-famous for its water jousting (joutes nautiques), a tradition dating back to 1666 when the port was inaugurated by Louis XIV. Every summer, the Fête de la Saint-Louis (around 25 August) sees jousters in white and blue competing on the Canal Royal in a unique festive atmosphere. Georges Brassens, born in Sète in 1921, is the city's other guardian figure. His museum space by the Thau lagoon, near the Corniche beach where he loved to walk, attracts thousands of visitors each year. The Marine Cemetery, immortalised by Paul Valéry's poem, offers a vertiginous panorama over the Mediterranean from the heights of Mont Saint-Clair. The fishing port, the largest in French Mediterranean, enlivens the upper quarter with its colourful trawlers and fish auction. The Thau lagoon, famous for its oysters and mussels, creates a unique lakeside landscape with its oyster parks visible from the mountain.

Route Marseille → Sète
Departing Marseille, your driver joins the A7 northward, then branches onto the A54 at Salon-de-Provence. After bypassing Nîmes, the route follows the A9 towards Montpellier. After the southern Montpellier bypass, the exit for Sète is via the A9 then the D600 which runs along the Thau lagoon. Arrival in Sète can be from the north (station area, city centre) or south (the Corniche, beaches). Mont Saint-Clair, recognisable from afar, serves as a visual landmark. Tolls on this route total approximately €20. The journey takes 2 hours under normal conditions but can reach 2h35 in summer, mainly due to traffic around Montpellier. In summer, access to Sète via the Corniche road can be slow on weekends.

Specific tips for the Marseille → Sète route
For Sète's most spectacular view, ask your driver to climb to the top of Mont Saint-Clair (road accessible by car): the 360° panorama over the sea, Thau lagoon, Pyrenees and Cévennes is unforgettable. For lunch, the upper quarter around the Canal Royal offers the best tielles (Sétois octopus pie, a local speciality) and seafood restaurants. For the Saint-Louis jousts (late August), book your taxi several weeks in advance as the city is packed. The Brassens museum is open daily except Mondays (€7 entry). For an oyster excursion to Bouzigues (10 km from Sète on the Thau lagoon), your driver can take you there for a small supplement. Parking in Sète city centre is very difficult in summer — a decisive advantage of taking a taxi.
