Nîmes, nicknamed the French Rome for the exceptional preservation of its ancient monuments, is an unmissable destination from Marseille. The Nîmes Arena, built in the 1st century, is the best-preserved in the Roman world and still hosts bullfights during the Pentecost and Harvest Ferias, as well as internationally renowned concerts. The Maison Carrée, an intact Roman temple dating from the start of the common era, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. Twenty-five kilometres to the northeast, the Pont du Gard, a spectacular Roman aqueduct, completes this exceptional ancient trilogy. Nîmes is also a vibrant city, marked by Spanish influence in its bullfighting culture, gastronomy (brandade de morue, petit pâté nîmois) and festivals. Professionals visit for the convention centre or peripheral business zones, while tourists explore the Jardin de la Fontaine, France's first public garden laid out in the 18th century on an ancient spring site. A taxi is ideal for this journey, especially if you wish to combine Nîmes and the Pont du Gard in a single day.

Route

Route Marseille → Nîmes

Your driver leaves Marseille via the A7 (Autoroute du Soleil) towards Lyon, passes through Septèmes-les-Vallons and Plan-de-Campagne, then branches onto the A54 after the Salon-de-Provence toll. The A54 crosses the Crau plain and skirts north of Arles before continuing towards Nîmes. After the Gallargues toll, you reach the outskirts of Nîmes via the Nîmes Ouest exit (for the city centre and arena) or Nîmes Centre. Along the way, you pass through the Costières de Nîmes wine region, one of the most southern appellations in the Rhône Valley, recognisable by its low garrigue scrubland and wine estates. Total tolls amount to approximately €12. The journey takes 1h20 under normal conditions but can reach 1h50 during rush hours, mainly due to slowdowns on the A7 leaving Marseille. Arrival in Nîmes is via the southern ring road which efficiently distributes to the city's various districts.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Marseille → Nîmes route

If visiting Nîmes for the Ferias (Pentecost in May-June or Harvest in September), book your taxi as early as possible: these events attract over one million visitors and transport is overwhelmed. The city celebrates 24/7, and returning to Marseille by taxi in the late evening is far more comfortable than the last TER train. For a complete cultural visit, combine Nîmes and the Pont du Gard in one day with our hourly hire option: the driver takes you to the arena, waits 2 hours, then drives to the Pont du Gard (25 km northeast) before returning to Marseille. It is the ideal day trip from Marseille. For dining, Place aux Herbes in old Nîmes is full of pleasant terraces. The Musée de la Romanité, opposite the arena, deserves 1h30. In summer, Nîmes is very hot (40°C common) — bring water and sun protection. The Halles de Nîmes market, open daily, is a gastronomic highlight.
