Marseille and Montpellier, the two largest Mediterranean cities in southern France, maintain intense exchanges — academic, medical, cultural and economic. Montpellier, France's fastest-growing city demographically for twenty years, hosts over 70,000 students in its universities and grandes écoles, including the oldest medical faculty in the Western world still in operation (founded in 1220). Many Marseille patients travel to Montpellier University Hospital for specialist consultations, and vice versa. Tech professionals regularly commute between the two French Tech hubs. Montpellier also attracts with its quality of life: the Place de la Comédie, the Antigone district designed by Ricardo Bofill, the beaches of Palavas and Carnon just 15 minutes from the centre, and some of France's liveliest nightlife. A taxi is particularly suited for this journey when travelling with luggage or family, as Marseille's Saint-Charles station is poorly connected to the city's southern districts.

Route

Route Marseille → Montpellier

From Marseille, your driver takes the A7 motorway (Autoroute du Soleil) northward, passes the Septèmes and Plan-de-Campagne interchanges, then branches onto the A54 after the Salon-de-Provence toll towards Arles and Nîmes. The A54 crosses the Crau plain, a stony steppe landscape stretching between the Alpilles and the Étang de Berre. At Arles, the motorway joins the A9 (La Languedocienne) towards Montpellier. You then cross the Petite Camargue in the Gard department, with Costières de Nîmes vineyards on both sides. After bypassing Nîmes to the south, the A9 continues through Lunel to Montpellier. The Montpellier Est exit leads to the city centre and Place de la Comédie, while Montpellier Sud serves the Odysseum district and business parks. Total tolls amount to approximately €18. The journey takes 1h45 in free-flowing traffic but can stretch to 2h20 on summer Friday evenings when the A9 is saturated between Nîmes and Montpellier.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Marseille → Montpellier route

To optimise your Marseille — Montpellier journey, absolutely avoid Fridays between 4pm and 8pm during summer: the A9 between Nîmes and Montpellier is one of France's busiest stretches during holiday departures. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the smoothest days. If you must travel on a summer Friday, leave before 2pm or after 9pm. For conferences at the Corum in Montpellier, book your taxi the day before as demand surges during major events (FISE, Comédie du Livre, festivals). If arriving at Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport, we also provide return transfers. Montpellier's tramway serves the city centre well but does not reach the Sud de France TGV station (Odysseum) — your TaxiNeo driver drops you at the exact address, whether station, hotel or conference venue. In winter, this route is rarely disrupted by snow, but strong mistral winds can slow traffic on the A54 across the Crau plain.
