Menton, the last French town before the Italian border, is a jewel of the French Riviera nestled between sea and mountain. Nicknamed the 'Pearl of France', it enjoys the mildest microclimate on the Côte d'Azur, which earned it worldwide fame for citrus cultivation, particularly the Menton lemon (IGP since 2015). The Lemon Festival every February is one of the Côte d'Azur's most spectacular events: monumental floats entirely covered in oranges and lemons parade along the seafront while the Biovès gardens host giant citrus motifs attracting 240,000 visitors. Menton is also the city of exceptional gardens: the Serre de la Madone garden (listed historic monument), the Val Rahmeh botanical garden, the Maria Serena garden and the Pian palm grove offer an unparalleled botanical walk in France. The old town, with its ochre and pastel facades stacked on the hillside, the baroque Saint-Michel church and the Vieux-Château cemetery (panoramic views over the bay and Italy), evokes neighbouring Liguria more than Provence. Jean Cocteau chose Menton to create his museum in the port bastion (now the Jean Cocteau Museum - Séverin Wunderman collection). The Promenade du Soleil runs along Menton bay for 2 km of pebble and sand beaches.

Route

Route Marseille → Menton

Departing Marseille, your driver takes the A8 (La Provençale then Estérel motorway) towards Nice. The journey crosses all of eastern Provence and the Côte d'Azur: Aubagne, Brignoles, the Estérel massif (spectacular between Fréjus and Cannes with red rocks plunging into the sea), Cannes, Antibes, Nice. After Nice, the A8 becomes the Moyenne Corniche before rejoining the coastal A8 section towards Monaco and Menton. Arrival in Menton is via the Menton or Menton-Garavan exit (closer to Italy). Total A8 tolls amount to approximately €20. The journey takes 2h25 under normal conditions but can reach 3h05 in summer (traffic between Cannes and Nice) and during the Monaco Grand Prix (late May) or the Lemon Festival (February).

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Marseille → Menton route

Menton's old town is best explored on foot: ask to be dropped at the port or the Promenade du Soleil. The exceptional gardens each require 1 to 2 hours — the Serre de la Madone garden (guided tours, €8) is the most remarkable. For the Lemon Festival (February), book your taxi 3-4 weeks ahead as the town is packed. The walk up to the Vieux-Château cemetery offers Menton's finest view over the bay and Italy — climb on foot from the church square. For an Italian excursion, Ventimiglia is 10 km away (famous Friday market for clothes and leather) and San Remo 40 km — your driver can take you there with a supplement. Restaurant Mirazur (3 Michelin stars, ranked world's best restaurant in 2019) is in Menton — booking essential several months ahead.
