Grenoble, nicknamed the 'Capital of the Alps', is a city of 160,000 inhabitants nestled between three mountain ranges: the Vercors to the south-west, the Chartreuse to the north and the Belledonne chain to the east. This unique geographic setting gives it a spectacular natural backdrop, with snow-capped peaks visible from the city centre. The Saint-Laurent quarter, on the right bank of the Isère, preserves remarkable medieval heritage including the Saint-Laurent church crypt (6th century).
