Briançon is France's highest city at 1,326 metres altitude, perched on a glacial bar at the confluence of the Durance, Guisane and Cerveyrette rivers. Its Vauban fortifications, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 as part of the Vauban major sites network, constitute an exceptional defensive ensemble: the Vauban city (fortified upper town), the forts of Salettes, Trois-Têtes and Randouillet, the Asfeld bridge (a single-arch bridge spanning the Durance at 56 m height) and the Y communication form a coherent system unique in the world. The city is home to Serre Chevalier, one of the largest ski areas in the Southern Alps with 250 km of runs from 1,200 to 2,800 m altitude. In summer, Briançon is an ideal base camp for cycling (Col du Galibier 30 km away, Col d'Izoard 20 km, Col du Lautaret — legendary Tour de France climbs) and hiking in the Écrins National Park. The Vauban city, with its steep lanes paved with Durance pebbles, its fountains, Notre-Dame church and artisan shops, offers an authentic mountain atmosphere unique in France. Briançon is also the gateway to the Col de Montgenèvre and Italy (Turin 110 km away).

Route

Route Marseille → Briançon

Departing Marseille, your driver takes the A51 northward towards Aix-en-Provence, then ascends the Durance valley through Pertuis, Manosque and Sisteron. After Sisteron (the 'gateway to Provence'), the Route Napoléon (N85) climbs to Gap through the Pre-Alps and Col Bayard (1,248 m). From Gap, the N94 follows the upper Durance valley through increasingly spectacular Alpine scenery. You pass through Chorges (on the shores of Lake Serre-Ponçon), Embrun (former Alpine capital), Mont-Dauphin (another Vauban UNESCO fortress) and L'Argentière-la-Bessée. The final section follows the Guisane through the Serre Chevalier valley to Briançon. Tolls are limited to the A51 (approximately €8), with the remainder being toll-free national roads. The journey takes 3h15 under normal conditions but can reach 4h10 in winter depending on mountain driving conditions. In summer, the Col du Lautaret (possible variant) offers an exceptional panorama of the Meije glaciers.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Marseille → Briançon route

In winter (November to April), driving conditions between Gap and Briançon can be tricky: black ice, snow, mountain fog. Our drivers are equipped with winter tyres and know the road perfectly. Bring warm clothes even if leaving Marseille in a T-shirt — the temperature difference can reach 20°C! For skiers heading to Serre Chevalier, specify your resort (Chantemerle, Villeneuve, Le Monêtier) when booking. Your driver can stop at Embrun (15 min) to admire the cathedral and the Durance rock. Briançon's Vauban city is explored on foot (2h for the complete rampart circuit). For a Col d'Izoard excursion (open June-October), request the hourly hire option. The Asfeld bridge, a military engineering masterpiece, is accessible on foot from the Vauban city (15 min each way).
