Gap, prefecture of the Hautes-Alpes, is the highest prefecture city in France at 735 metres altitude. Nestled in a basin surrounded by mountains, it offers an exceptional living environment between Provence and the Alps. Gap is the gateway to the Écrins National Park, one of France's most beautiful Alpine massifs with peaks exceeding 4,000 m (the Barre des Écrins reaches 4,102 m) and spectacular glaciers. Lake Serre-Ponçon, France's largest artificial lake by surface area (28 km²), offers an impressive water sports playground 20 km northeast of the city. Col Bayard (1,248 m), by which you arrive from the south, provides a magnificent panorama over the Champsaur valley and the Dévoluy massif. Gap is also a city of history: the Charance estate, a former episcopal palace transformed into the Écrins National Park headquarters, overlooks the city and houses an alpine botanical conservatory. The Saturday morning market on Place Jean-Marcellin is one of the liveliest in the southern Alps, blending mountain products (tourtons, ravioles, cheeses) with Provençal flavours (olive oil, tapenade). Gap is also a base camp for skiing in winter (Orcières-Merlette, SuperDévoluy, Ancelle within 30 km) and hiking in summer.

Route

Route Marseille → Gap

Departing Marseille, your driver takes the A51 towards Aix-en-Provence. The motorway crosses the Marseille suburban hills, bypasses Aix to the east, then ascends the Durance valley passing through Pertuis, Manosque and Sisteron, a citadel perched on its rock marking the historic border between Provence and the Dauphiné. After Sisteron, the N85 (Route Napoléon, taken by the Emperor on his return from Elba in 1815) climbs gradually through the Pre-Alps. Col Bayard (1,248 m) marks the route's highest point with a magnificent panorama over the Champsaur and Dévoluy massif. The descent to Gap crosses La Freissinouse before arriving in the Gap basin. Tolls are limited to the A51 section (approximately €8). The journey takes 2h25 under normal conditions but can reach 3h05 in winter (snowy Col Bayard) or on Friday evenings during school holidays.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Marseille → Gap route

In winter (December to March), Col Bayard may be snowy and require winter tyres or chains — our vehicles are equipped accordingly. Ask your driver to stop at Sisteron to admire the citadel from the Durance bridge (10 minutes). For a spectacular detour, the road to Lake Serre-Ponçon (20 km from Gap) is worth the trip with a modest supplement. If you are heading to a ski resort (Orcières, SuperDévoluy, Ancelle), mention it when booking: the driver takes you there directly. Gap is an ideal stopover to break a journey to Briançon or the upper Durance resorts. The Saturday morning market (8am-1pm) on Place Jean-Marcellin is unmissable: tourtons (stuffed fritters), goat cheeses, mountain honey and artisanal génépi.

For 4 passengers, the per-person cost (€63 to €80) is reasonable given the absence of direct rail service and the duration of bus alternatives.
