Forcalquier, sub-prefecture of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, is a hilltop town of character overlooking the Durance valley and the Valensole plateau. Former capital of the County of Forcalquier in the Middle Ages, the city preserves a remarkable historical heritage: the Notre-Dame-du-Bourguet cathedral, the Cordeliers convent with its Gothic cloister, and the citadel crowned by the Notre-Dame-de-Provence chapel offering a 360° panorama over the Luberon, Lure mountain and the Digne Pre-Alps. Forcalquier is world-renowned for its Monday market, one of the finest markets in Provence attracting thousands of visitors each week with stalls of goat cheese (Banon AOP), lavender honey, olive oil and artisan products. The town is also the birthplace of L'Occitane en Provence, the famous cosmetics brand founded here in 1976 by Olivier Baussan. The lavender fields of the Valensole plateau, 30 km east, offer an unforgettable spectacle in June-July of endless purple rows stretching to the horizon. The Haute-Provence Observatory (OHP), located at Saint-Michel-l'Observatoire 12 km away, is where the first exoplanet was discovered in 1995 by Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz. Forcalquier is an ideal base camp for exploring eastern Luberon, the Verdon Gorges (50 km) and Lure mountain (1,826 m).

Route

Route Marseille → Forcalquier

Departing Marseille, your driver takes the A51 (Val de Durance motorway) towards Aix-en-Provence then Sisteron. The A51 follows the Durance valley through the limestone hills of Middle Provence, passing the junctions of Aix-en-Provence, Pertuis and Manosque. After the Peyruis exit (n°19), the route leaves the motorway for the D4096, a winding but picturesque departmental road crossing the villages of Niozelles and Pierrerue before reaching Forcalquier from the south. The journey offers magnificent views of the Valensole plateau to the east and the Luberon foothills to the south. Tolls are limited to the A51 section (approximately €7). The journey takes 1h15 under normal conditions, potentially extending to 1h40 in summer (tourist traffic on the D4096) and on Monday mornings (market day in Forcalquier).

Specific tips for the Marseille → Forcalquier route

Forcalquier market takes place on Monday mornings — if this is your goal, arrive before 9:30am to enjoy the atmosphere and best products. Try the Banon AOP cheese, wrapped in chestnut leaves. To visit the lavender fields of the Valensole plateau (blooming mid-June to mid-July), ask your driver for a detour via Valensole: allow an extra 30 km and 30 minutes. The Saint-Michel-l'Observatoire observatory offers public observation evenings in summer (booking required). The Cordeliers convent hosts concerts and cultural events from May to October. The 'Mourres' trail (5 km from Forcalquier) features a lunar landscape of erosion-sculpted rocks — bring good walking shoes. In summer, temperatures easily reach 35°C, but evenings at altitude (550 m) remain pleasant.
