Apt is the capital of the Luberon and the sub-prefecture of Vaucluse. This characterful Provençal town is world-famous for its candied fruits (a tradition since the 14th century), its lavender (the Luberon is the world's leading producer) and its Saturday morning market, considered one of Provence's finest and most authentic. Apt is also an ideal base for exploring the Luberon's perched villages: Gordes, Roussillon (and its Ochre Path), Bonnieux, Ménerbes and Lacoste (the Marquis de Sade's château). The Luberon Regional Natural Park offers hikes through landscapes of garrigue, holm oaks and ochre cliffs.

Route

Route Marseille → Apt

From Marseille, take the A51 towards Aix-en-Provence then the D900 (former N100) heading east through Pertuis and the southern Luberon foothills. After Pertuis, the road gradually climbs into the southern Luberon hills. You arrive in Apt via the Calavon valley. Alternative: take the A7 north then exit at Cavaillon and cross the Luberon via the D900 (shorter but same duration). The scenery is typically Provençal: vineyards, cherry trees, lavender fields (in season) and perched villages visible in the distance.
