Digne-les-Bains, prefecture of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the region's only spa town, nestles at 600 metres altitude in a valley surrounded by pre-Alpine mountains scented with lavender and thyme. Its thermal waters, emerging at 50°C and known since Roman times, attract thousands of spa guests annually to the historic thermal establishment fed by the Eaux Chaudes spring. The town is also the terminus of the famous Train des Pignes, a narrow-gauge railway linking Digne to Nice in 3.5 hours through Haute-Provence's most spectacular gorges and valleys — a unique rail journey in France. Digne is the capital of lavender: every first weekend of August, the lavender corso parades through the streets with floats decorated with thousands of sprigs, in an explosion of blue and fragrance. The Haute-Provence Geological Reserve, Europe's largest (2,300 km²), protects remarkable palaeontological sites including a giant ammonite slab some twenty metres in diameter. Alexandra David-Néel, explorer of Tibet, spent her final years in Digne and her house-museum (Samten Dzong) can be visited free of charge. A taxi from Marseille is often the only practical solution for spa guests laden with luggage and families, as there is no direct rail service.

Route

Route Marseille → Digne-les-Bains

Departing Marseille, your driver takes the A51 towards Aix-en-Provence then Gap. The motorway crosses the Aix countryside, the Durance valley and the Luberon foothills. After Manosque, the A51 continues north along the Cadarache reservoir (CEA nuclear research centre) and the wooded hills of Haute-Provence. At the Peyruis / Les Mées exit, you spot the famous Pénitents des Mées, natural rock columns 100 metres high that stand like a procession of petrified monks. The N85 (Route Napoléon, taken by the Emperor on his return from Elba in March 1815) takes over for the final 30 kilometres through a landscape of hills covered with oaks, broom and lavender. You arrive in Digne via Boulevard Gassendi, the town's main thoroughfare named after the famous mathematician and philosopher born here in 1592. Tolls on the A51 section total approximately €12. The journey takes 2 hours under normal conditions but can reach 2h35 in summer when the A51 is busy between Aix and Manosque.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Marseille → Digne-les-Bains route

If coming for a spa cure in Digne, book your taxi for Monday morning (traditional start of 3-week cures) and plan an 8am departure to arrive comfortably before check-in formalities. The Digne Spa offers rheumatology and ENT treatments in a 1930s Art Deco setting. For the Train des Pignes, the station is in the town centre — a one-way Digne-Nice train trip with a taxi return makes a magnificent programme. The lavender corso (first weekend of August) is the year's main event: book your taxi several days ahead. The ammonite slab (free geological site) is 1.5 km north of town, accessible on foot or by taxi. The Alexandra David-Néel museum (Samten Dzong) is by appointment (free). Digne's market runs on Wednesday and Saturday mornings on Place du Général de Gaulle. In winter, mountain roads around Digne may be snowy, but the N85 and A51 are systematically cleared.
