The historic centre of Arles is a jewel of world heritage, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Roman and Romanesque monuments. The Arles Arena, a Roman amphitheatre seating 20,000 spectators, dominates the old town and continues to host bullfighting events and concerts. Place du Forum, immortalised by Van Gogh in his 'Café de Nuit', is the beating heart of Arles life with its café terraces shaded by century-old plane trees. The ancient theatre, Constantine's baths, the underground cryptoporticus and the Alyscamps (a Roman necropolis lined with sarcophagi) complete an exceptional monumental ensemble concentrated within a pedestrian area of less than one square kilometre. The Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles, opened in 2014, presents contemporary art exhibitions in dialogue with the Dutch master who created over 300 paintings in Arles in just 15 months. The Rencontres de la Photographie, founded in 1970, transform some thirty heritage venues into photo galleries each summer (July-September), making Arles the world capital of photography. The Arles Antique departmental museum, opened in 1995 on the Rhône bank, houses the bust of Caesar discovered in the river in 2007 and a unique 31-metre Roman barge. The Roquette quarter, a former fishermen's and sailors' neighbourhood, offers colourful alleyways and authentic popular atmosphere.
