Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is one of Provence's most charming villages, nestled at the foot of the limestone Alpilles range. It was here that Vincent van Gogh stayed at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum from May 1889 to May 1890, a period during which he painted 150 canvases including 'The Starry Night' and 'Irises'. The village also houses the archaeological site of Glanum, a remarkably preserved Gallo-Roman city with its triumphal arch and the Mausoleum of the Julii. The centre of Saint-Rémy, with its plane tree-shaded squares, fountains and markets, embodies the Provençal art of living. Nostradamus was born here in 1503. The surrounding Alpilles offer spectacular hikes among garrigue and olive groves.
