Les Baux-de-Provence ranks among France's most visited sites, attracting over 1.5 million visitors annually to its rocky spur in the Alpilles. This village of just 22 permanent residents perches at 245 metres altitude and offers exceptional views over the Camargue, the Crau plain, the Luberon and, on clear days, Mont Ventoux. The Château des Baux, a medieval fortress dismantled on Richelieu's orders in 1632, extends over 7 hectares atop the rock — one of France's largest castle complexes, with reconstructed trebuchets and summer chivalry shows. But it is the Carrières de Lumières that has renewed Les Baux's appeal: housed in former white limestone quarries 14 metres high, this immersive show projects artworks across 7,000 m² of walls and floors accompanied by music — Klimt, Van Gogh, Cézanne and Dalí have all featured. The village also boasts excellent Michelin-starred restaurants (L'Oustau de Baumanière, 2 stars) and olive estates producing AOP Vallée des Baux-de-Provence olive oil, one of France's most acclaimed.
