Les Baux-de-Provence ranks among France's most visited sites, attracting over 1.5 million visitors annually to its rocky spur in the Alpilles. This village of just 22 permanent residents perches at 245 metres altitude and offers exceptional views over the Camargue, the Crau plain, the Luberon and, on clear days, Mont Ventoux. The Château des Baux, a medieval fortress dismantled on Richelieu's orders in 1632, extends over 7 hectares atop the rock — one of France's largest castle complexes, with reconstructed trebuchets and summer chivalry shows. But it is the Carrières de Lumières that has renewed Les Baux's appeal: housed in former white limestone quarries 14 metres high, this immersive show projects artworks across 7,000 m² of walls and floors accompanied by music — Klimt, Van Gogh, Cézanne and Dalí have all featured. The village also boasts excellent Michelin-starred restaurants (L'Oustau de Baumanière, 2 stars) and olive estates producing AOP Vallée des Baux-de-Provence olive oil, one of France's most acclaimed.

Route

Route Marseille → Les Baux-de-Provence

Departing Marseille, your driver takes the A7 (Autoroute du Soleil) towards Lyon. After the Lançon-de-Provence toll, exit at Saint-Martin-de-Crau / Salon-de-Provence to join the D99 towards Mouriès and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The road then enters the Alpilles Regional Natural Park, a landscape of limestone hills covered in garrigue scrub, pine forests and centuries-old olive trees. At Maussane-les-Alpilles, renowned for its olive mills, turn onto the D27 which climbs in hairpins towards Les Baux. Arrival is via the spectacular Val d'Enfer, a gorge of white rocks sculpted by erosion that inspired Dante's Inferno — the Carrières de Lumières are located right here. Parking for Les Baux is below the village; the walk up takes 5 minutes. Tolls amount to approximately €5 on the motorway section. The journey takes 55 minutes normally but can reach 1h15 in high season (July-August) when access roads to the village are congested.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Marseille → Les Baux-de-Provence route

Les Baux-de-Provence is extremely busy in July-August and on spring weekends. To avoid crowds, arrive before 10am or after 5pm. The Carrières de Lumières opens at 9:30am and the first sessions are calmest — show duration is about 40 minutes. Ideally combine Les Baux with Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (10 km) for a full day: ask your driver for an hourly hire arrangement. The combined château + Carrières de Lumières ticket costs €18 (adult). For a gourmet lunch, L'Oustau de Baumanière (2 stars) requires booking several weeks ahead; Cabro d'Or, more accessible, is an excellent alternative. Take home olive oil from Moulin Castelas or Moulin Jean-Marie Cornille in Maussane — both are the appellation's benchmarks. The mistral often blows at Les Baux, especially in winter: bring a warm jacket as the village is very exposed.

Tolls: ~5 € de péages (section A7)
