Orthez is one of the most historically rich towns in Béarn and the Pyrenean foothills. Former capital of the Viscounty of Béarn before Pau, it was the seat of power of Gaston III of Foix-Béarn, known as Gaston Fébus (1331-1391), one of the most fascinating princes of the French Middle Ages: legendary hunter (author of the 'Book of the Hunt', the finest medieval hunting treatise), brilliant administrator, feared warrior and patron of the arts. His Moncade castle dominated the town from a promontory — only the Tour Moncade remains (pentagonal keep, unique in France), offering a magnificent panorama over the town, the Gave de Pau and the Pyrenees in clear weather. The Pont Vieux of Orthez is the town's emblem: this 13th-century fortified bridge, with its central crenellated tower, spans the Gave de Pau and is one of France's most beautiful medieval bridges. It was the site of the Battle of Orthez (1814), one of the last Napoleonic battles on French soil, pitting Wellington against Marshal Soult's troops. The Maison Jeanne d'Albret (15th century), where the Queen of Navarre and mother of Henri IV was born, is another heritage jewel. Orthez is also an industrial hub (Total, chemicals) and the heart of a rich Béarnais terroir: poule au pot (chicken), garbure (vegetable and confit soup), sheep's cheese, Salies-de-Béarn salt (10 km away), Jurançon (sweet white wine from the Pyrenean foothills).

Route

Route Bordeaux → Orthez

From Bordeaux, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A65 (Autoroute de Gascogne) towards Pau. The A65 first crosses the vineyards south of the Gironde (Langon, Bazas) then enters the great Landes de Gascogne forest. You pass Captieux, Roquefort and the Landes plateau. After Mont-de-Marsan (interchange without entering the town), the motorway continues south-east towards Orthez. The landscape gradually changes: pine forest gives way to verdant Pyrenean foothills, with first views of the Pyrenees chain in clear weather. The Orthez exit appears after about 1h50 of motorway. Arrival in town is quick, and the Pont Vieux can be glimpsed from the northern entrance. A65 tolls amount to approximately €18. The journey is very smooth, the A65 being one of France's least busy motorways (except during the Bayonne or Pau festivals).

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Orthez route

The Pont Vieux is Orthez's symbol: walk across it and admire the Gave de Pau from its central tower (free access). In spring, the gave is turbulent and spectacular. The Tour Moncade (Gaston Fébus's castle) can be visited in summer (guided tour, €5, 45 min): the panorama from the top of the pentagonal keep is remarkable. The Maison Jeanne d'Albret (Béarnais Protestantism museum, €4) traces the history of the Reformation in Béarn — Orthez was a Protestant stronghold in the 16th century. The Orthez market (Tuesday morning, hall and Place d'Armes) is an excellent Béarnais market: sheep's cheeses from the Basque Country and Béarn, charcuterie, garbure, Salies salt. Our drivers recommend a detour to Salies-de-Béarn (10 km, 15 min): a picturesque spa town known for its rock salt (salt spring exploited since antiquity) and its IGP Bayonne ham (traditional curing is done in Salies). Francis Jammes, the Béarn poet, lived in Orthez (house-museum, visit by reservation).
