Bayonne is the historic capital of the French Basque Country (Labourd), a city of art and history at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers. Its architectural heritage is exceptional: the Sainte-Marie Cathedral (13th century, Gothic, UNESCO-listed as part of the Compostela routes) with its magnificent cloister, Vauban's ramparts, the red and green half-timbered houses of Petit Bayonne and Grand Bayonne, and the Château-Vieux overlooking the Nive. Bayonne is world-renowned for three gastronomic specialities. Bayonne ham, cured in the Landes and Béarn following ancestral know-how (IGP), is one of Europe's finest dry hams. Bayonne chocolate has a unique history: Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal in the 16th century brought the art of chocolate to Bayonne, making it one of the first cities in France to work with cacao. Today, Atelier du Chocolat, Cazenave and other artisans carry on this tradition. Finally, pelota is the king of sports: the Saint-André trinquet is France's oldest (1563). The Bayonne Festivals (late July, 5 days) are France's largest popular festival after the Paris 14th of July: 1.3 million revellers dressed in white and red flood the city for cow races, concerts, bandas and non-stop celebration. Taxis from Bordeaux are in high demand during the Festivals (booking essential 1 month ahead), by tourists heading for the inner Basque Country (Espelette, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port) and by business travellers.
Route
Route Bordeaux → Bayonne
From Bordeaux, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A63 motorway towards Spain. The A63 first crosses the Landes de Gascogne forest for over 100 km, a maritime pine corridor punctuated by rare rest areas. You pass the Langon, Labouheyre and Castets interchanges. After Dax (major motorway junction), the A63 branches south-west towards Bayonne. The landscape changes: the flat landes gradually give way to verdant foothills of the Pyrenees. The first Basque villages appear with their characteristic half-timbered houses and red or green shutters. Arrival in Bayonne is from the north, along the Adour. The 'Bayonne-Centre' exit puts you minutes from the cathedral and Petit Bayonne. A63 tolls amount to approximately €16. The journey takes 1h55 normally but can reach 2h30 on July-August Saturdays and during the Bayonne Festivals when the A63 is saturated between Dax and Bayonne.

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Bayonne route
The Bayonne Festivals (last Wednesday of July to Sunday, 5 days) are a unique event: 1.3 million revellers in white and red. Book your taxi at least 1 month ahead, demand is extreme. The dress code is white and red (white trousers, white shirt, red scarf and belt) — available in all Bayonne shops. Outside the Festivals, Bayonne is a magnificent city to explore on foot: the cathedral and cloister (free), the Basque Museum (the most important on Basque culture, €8), the chocolatiers of Rue du Port-Neuf (tastings at Cazenave since 1854, famous for frothy hot chocolate), and Petit Bayonne for pintxos (Basque tapas) in the evening. Bayonne ham is best bought at Pierre Ibaialde (Rue des Cordeliers), a renowned artisan — our drivers know the address. For Espelette pepper lovers, the village is 25 km away (30 min): our driver can take you there for a small supplement. In October, the Bayonne Ham Fair (3 days) is the occasion to taste and buy the best ham directly from producers.
