Pau is an exceptional city for its geographical setting and history. Perched on a promontory overlooking the Gave de Pau river, it offers from its famous Boulevard des Pyrénées a breathtaking panorama of the Pyrenees chain, from the Pic du Midi d'Ossau to the Pic d'Anie. This 1,800-metre boulevard, designed by Napoleon I, was described by Lamartine as 'the finest land view, just as Naples is the finest sea view'. Pau is above all the birthplace of Henri IV, the 'good King Henri', born in the Château de Pau in 1553. The magnificently restored castle houses the future king's turtle-shell cradle and a national museum devoted to Béarnais Renaissance. In the 19th century, British aristocrats made Pau a fashionable winter resort, attracted by its mild climate. They created continental Europe's first golf course (1856), a racecourse and the Pau Hunt. The city retains from that era sumptuous English villas, the Trespoey quarter and a tradition of elegance. Béarn, of which Pau is the capital, is a land of gastronomy: poule au pot (the dish Henri IV wanted in every home), Béarnaise garbure (thick vegetable and duck soup), Jurançon wine (dry or sweet white), Ossau-Iraty cheese. Taxis from Bordeaux are used by business travellers (Pau is an aerospace and petroleum hub with TotalEnergies), tourists heading for ski resorts (Gourette, La Pierre-Saint-Martin), and families visiting Henri IV's castle.

Route

Route Bordeaux → Pau

From Bordeaux, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A65, the Autoroute de Gascogne, inaugurated in 2010. This recent motorway crosses preserved rural landscapes: the Landes forest south of the Gironde, Armagnac vineyards in the Gers, Tursan hillsides and finally the Béarn hills. You pass the Langon, Captieux, Aire-sur-l'Adour and Garlin interchanges. The A65 is comfortable but renowned as France's most expensive motorway per kilometre (toll of approximately €22 for 200 km). Traffic flows freely, unlike the older route via Dax (A63+A64) which is longer but with lower tolls. Arrival in Pau is from the north, with a spectacular descent towards the Gave de Pau and a first view of snow-capped Pyrenees (in winter and spring). Your driver drops you at the castle, the Boulevard des Pyrénées or your address. The journey takes 2h15 in free-flowing traffic and can reach 2h45 on busy days (Friday evenings, ski returns).

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Pau route

The Boulevard des Pyrénées is the first place to visit: arrive in late afternoon for the golden panorama on the peaks. The Château de Pau is visited in 1h (guided tour mandatory, free, very interesting — Henri IV's turtle-shell cradle is moving). The free funicular connects the lower town (station) to the upper town (boulevard). The Hédas quarter, a former ravine turned bohemian district, is the trendy spot for dining and nightlife. For wine lovers, a stop in the Jurançon vineyard (10 km south of Pau) is essential: sweet Jurançon, the wine of Henri IV's baptism, is unique. Ski resorts are 1h-1h30 away: Gourette (closest), La Pierre-Saint-Martin (family-friendly), Artouste (panoramic train). In September, the Pau Grand Prix (street motor race) is a spectacular event. The Le Jeu de Paume restaurant (Château de Pau) offers gastronomic cuisine facing the Pyrenees.
