Marmande is an endearing town in the Lot-et-Garonne, a sub-prefecture nestled in the fertile Garonne valley, world-famous for its tomato — the Marmande Tomato, a ribbed and fleshy variety, is an iconic food of the South-West. The town has remarkable heritage that is often overlooked: the Notre-Dame church (Gothic, 13th-14th century) houses a magnificent Renaissance cloister, rare in Aquitaine, whose galleries open onto a garden of trimmed box hedges. The old quarter around the Place du Marché preserves half-timbered houses and 17th-century townhouses. The Garonne, flowing through the town, offers pleasant landscaped banks for walking. Marmande is also an excellent base for visiting the bastides of the Lot-et-Garonne, those medieval new towns founded in the 13th century by the kings of France and England: Miramont-de-Guyenne, Duras (remarkable Renaissance castle), Seyches. The Marmande area is great agricultural land: tomatoes, strawberries, kiwis (the Lot-et-Garonne is France's largest kiwi producer), ente plums and tobacco. The Tomato Festival (mid-August) is the major popular event: float parade, recipe competitions, tomato battle and three days of festivities. The wholesale fruit and vegetable trade makes Marmande an important regional economic centre, linking South-West producers to national markets.

Route

Route Bordeaux → Marmande

From Bordeaux, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A62 motorway (Autoroute des Deux Mers) towards Toulouse. The A62 first crosses the Entre-deux-Mers vineyards and Bordeaux côtes. You pass Langon and the Garonne bridge, then enter the Lot-et-Garonne department. The landscape changes: Bordeaux vineyards give way to large-scale farming on the Garonne plain (maize, sunflowers, orchards). The Marmande exit appears after about 55 min of motorway. Arrival in town is quick from the interchange. A62 tolls amount to approximately €8. The journey is smooth outside major holiday weekends. An alternative via the D113 (former national road) through Cadillac and La Réole is possible: longer (1h30) but more picturesque, through the Cadillac-Côtes de Bordeaux vineyards.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Marmande route

The Tomato Festival (mid-August, 3 days) is Marmande's major event: float parade, recipe contests, producers' market and festivities. Book your taxi on the festival weekend. The Renaissance cloister of Notre-Dame church (free access) is an architectural surprise — a hidden gem not to be missed. The Marmande market (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, Place du Marché and hall) is excellent for local produce: tomatoes in summer, strawberries, Lot-et-Garonne kiwis. The Château de Duras (25 km, 20 min) is worth a detour: medieval castle with panoramic views over the Dropt valley, and the Côtes de Duras appellation produces excellent dry white wines. Our drivers can combine Marmande with a stop at La Réole (30 km), a small town on the Garonne with France's oldest town hall and a Benedictine priory.
