Agen, prefecture of Lot-et-Garonne, is world-famous for its prunes, a gastronomic speciality since the 12th century when monks of Clairac grafted the Ente plum tree brought back from the Crusades. Agen prunes hold an IGP and come in a thousand recipes. But Agen is also a characterful city on the Garonne, with its canal bridge (France's second longest after Briare), its Romanesque Saint-Caprais Cathedral and its Fine Arts Museum housing 5 Goyas including the famous self-portrait. The city pulses with rugby through SU Agen, a historic Top 14 club. The Canal de Garonne, an extension of the Canal du Midi, crosses Agen and offers lovely walks on foot or by bike.
