Capbreton is a unique seaside resort on the Landes coastline, the only one with a fishing port between Arcachon and Bayonne, across nearly 250 km of coast. This singularity is explained by the Gouf de Capbreton, an exceptional submarine canyon plunging over 3,000 metres deep just a few hundred metres from shore — the only submarine canyon in the world to approach so close to the coast. This oceanic trench, whose origin remains debated (tectonic fault or ancient bed of the Adour river which flowed here before being diverted to Bayonne in the 16th century), creates an exceptional marine ecosystem attracting tuna, dolphins and sometimes whales. The port of Capbreton, nestled in the Boudigau estuary, is a picturesque fishing port where trawlers land chipirons (squid), hake, sole and the famous line-caught tuna each morning. The Estacade, a long wooden pier stretching into the ocean (300 m), is Capbreton's symbol: a spectacular walk above the waves, it offers a panorama of the Landes coast and the Pyrenees. Built and rebuilt many times since the 16th century (the latest reconstruction dates from 2004), it protects the port entrance. Capbreton is also a renowned surf spot: the Plage de la Piste, to the north, offers regular waves for all levels, while the Santocha beach (south of the port) is more family-friendly. The town adjoins Hossegor, separated only by the Boudigau canal, forming a lively and complementary seaside conurbation.

Route

Route Bordeaux → Capbreton

From Bordeaux, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A63 towards Bayonne. The motorway crosses the Landes forest, a vast expanse of maritime pines planted in the 19th century. You pass Salles, Belin-Béliet, then the major Landes resorts: Biscarrosse and Mimizan are to the west, invisible from the motorway. After Castets, the Capbreton exit (no. 10) leads directly to the resort via the D28. The arrival is charming: you cross the pine forest before emerging at the port and ocean. A63 tolls amount to approximately €13. The journey is smooth on weekdays, but summer Fridays (holiday departures) and Sunday evenings (returns) see slowdowns on the A63, especially between Bordeaux and Belin-Béliet.

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Capbreton route

The port of Capbreton is the heart of the town: fish market every morning (7am-8am, trawler arrivals), seafood restaurants along the quays (chipirons a la plancha are unmissable). The Estacade can be walked (300 m above the waves): spectacular sunset views. For surfing, the Plage de la Piste (north of Capbreton) offers ideal waves for beginners and intermediates; surf schools on site (€30-40 per lesson). The Santocha beach (south of the port) is sheltered and family-friendly. The Capbreton market (Tuesday and Saturday morning) offers local products: duck, foie gras, Landes pastis, Adour kiwis. Hossegor is 5 min on foot (cross the bridge over the Boudigau): marine lake, competition beaches (Quiksilver Pro), surf shops. In summer, the Vélodyssée cycle path runs along the coast: ideal for linking Capbreton to Hossegor, Seignosse or Vieux-Boucau (bike hire at the port).
