Auch, capital of the Gers department and historic capital of Gascony, is a city of art and history perched on a promontory overlooking the Gers valley. This town of 23,000 inhabitants harbours unsuspected treasures. The Cathedral of Sainte-Marie d'Auch, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela, is a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic art completed in the 17th century. Its 18 Renaissance stained-glass windows by Arnaut de Moles (1507-1513) are considered the finest ensemble of Renaissance stained glass in southern France, rivalling those of Chartres in quality and preservation. The 113 carved oak choir stalls (1520-1554), featuring over 1,500 biblical and mythological figures, are among the most remarkable in France. The monumental staircase of 370 steps, built between 1863 and 1869, connects the upper town (cathedral quarter) to the lower town (banks of the Gers) and offers a striking panorama of the Pyrenees on clear days. At the top, the statue of d'Artagnan recalls that Charles de Batz-Castelmore, the real d'Artagnan who inspired Alexandre Dumas, was Gascon, born a few kilometres from Auch. The Tour d'Armagnac, a 14th-century 40-metre keep and former archbishop's prison, dominates the old town with its lanes featuring 'pousterles' (covered passages typical of Gascony).
Route
Route Bordeaux → Auch
From Bordeaux, your driver takes the ring road then the A62 (Autoroute des Deux Mers) towards Toulouse. You pass Langon and its Sauternes vineyards, then the Garonne and its hillsides. After Agen (about 2h), you leave the motorway for the N21 heading south towards Auch. This last section crosses the rolling Gascony countryside, a landscape of gentle hills, sunflower fields and Armagnac vineyards. Hilltop villages alternate with isolated farms in a preserved rural setting. Arrival at Auch is spectacular: the upper town suddenly appears on its promontory, dominated by the cathedral towers. A62 tolls amount to approximately €12. The journey is smooth outside rush hours around Agen. An alternative route via the A65 then departmental roads through Aire-sur-l'Adour is possible (same duration, fewer tolls but more winding roads).

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Auch route
The Sainte-Marie Cathedral is unmissable: allow 1h to admire the stained glass (morning light is ideal) and the choir stalls. Free entry, guided tour €6. The monumental staircase (370 steps) offers an exceptional panorama of the Pyrenees — walk down rather than up! The Museum of the Americas (former pre-Columbian art museum) has the second-largest collection in France after the Quai Branly. For Armagnac, visit the Jéhan de Monségur cellars in town or take an excursion to the vineyards (Condom, Eauze, 30-40 min). Gers gastronomy is exceptional: foie gras, duck breast, duck confit, Gascon pastis, Floc de Gascogne. The Auch market (Saturday morning, place de la Libération) is one of the finest in the South-West. In summer, the Éclats de Voix festival (world music) enlivens the town. Auch is a major stop on the Way of St James (via the Le Puy route).
