Mont-de-Marsan is the prefecture of the Landes, a human-scale town at the confluence of the Douze and Midou rivers, which form the Midouze, a tributary of the Adour. While less known than Dax or Biarritz to tourists, it holds a major place in south-western culture thanks to its Madeleine ferias, one of France's largest bullfighting events. Every July for 5 days, the city transforms: 750,000 visitors flood the streets, bandas (street brass bands) play relentlessly, cow races and corridas follow one another in the Plumaçon arena (7,000 seats), and bodegas (pop-up bars) never close. Mont-de-Marsan is also the 'city of three rivers' and has forged an original cultural identity around contemporary sculpture: the sculpture trail counts some thirty monumental open-air works, and the Despiau-Wlérick Museum (in the Lacataye dungeon, a 14th-century medieval fortress) is France's second museum of figurative sculpture after the Rodin Museum. Air Base 118, one of the French Air Force's most important, also sustains the city. Landes gastronomy is omnipresent: foie gras, duck breast, confits, pastis landais (brioche flavoured with orange blossom and rum), Armagnac and Floc de Gascogne.

Route

Route Bordeaux → Mont-de-Marsan

From Bordeaux, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A65 motorway (Autoroute de Gascogne) towards Pau. The A65 first crosses the vineyards south of the Gironde (Langon, Bazas), then enters the Landes department. The landscape gradually changes: vines give way to maritime pine forest and maize clearings. After Captieux and Roquefort (not the cheese, that is from Aveyron!), you cross the Landes de Gascogne, vast stretches of forest and meadow. The Mont-de-Marsan exit appears after 1h15 of motorway. The town is immediately accessible, with its compact centre around the river confluence. The A65 toll is approximately €14. The journey is smooth and pleasant, the A65 being one of France's least busy motorways (except during feria weekends in July).

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Mont-de-Marsan route

The Madeleine ferias (mid-July, 5 days) are the unmissable event: book your taxi at least 3 weeks ahead, demand is extreme. The Plumaçon arena offers corridas (afternoons) and course landaise cow races (mornings) — corrida tickets sell fast (€20-80). Outside feria, Mont-de-Marsan is a pleasant, quiet town: the open-air sculpture trail (free, map from tourist office) is an original 2h cultural walk. The Despiau-Wlérick Museum in the Lacataye dungeon is a remarkable surprise (entry: €5). Mont-de-Marsan market (Tuesday and Saturday mornings, Place Saint-Roch) is excellent for Landes produce. Air Base 118 organises open days (rare but spectacular). For a gastronomic circuit, combine Mont-de-Marsan with a stop at a Landes foie gras farm — our drivers know the best addresses.
