Souillac is a small town in northern Lot, nestled in the Dordogne valley, at the junction of the Quercy and Black Perigord. Its Abbey of Sainte-Marie, a 12th-century Romanesque jewel, has one of the most remarkable carved tympanums in France: the celebrated 'Prophet Isaiah' with flowing draperies, a masterpiece of Languedocian Romanesque sculpture, is considered one of the finest figures in Western medieval art. The church, covered by three domes on pendentives (a unique Byzantine influence in Occitanie), impresses with its proportions and luminosity. Souillac is also known for its Automaton Museum, one of the most important in Europe, housing an exceptional collection of mechanical automata and toys from the 19th and 20th centuries. The town is a privileged gateway to the treasures of the Black Perigord and Upper Quercy: the Lacave caves (5 km), the Padirac chasm (25 km), Rocamadour (30 km), Sarlat (30 km) and the Marqueyssac gardens (35 km). The Dordogne, which flows through Souillac, offers exceptional canoeing and fishing. Local gastronomy is sumptuous: foie gras, black Perigord truffles (in season), Perigord walnuts, cabecou (goat cheese), Cahors wine and walnut liqueur.
Route
Route Toulouse → Souillac
From Toulouse, your driver takes the northern ring road then the A62 towards Montauban-Bordeaux. After Montauban, you turn onto the A20 (Autoroute de l'Occitane) towards Cahors-Paris. The A20 crosses the white Quercy, a landscape of limestone causses and green valleys. You pass Cahors without entering, then the motorway climbs through the Gramat causse and the Martel causse. The landscape becomes wilder: limestone plateaux covered with truffle oaks, dry stone walls, sinkholes and deep combes. After the Souillac exit, a short descent leads to the Dordogne valley and the town. Arrival offers a view of the lauze stone rooftops and the abbey bell tower. Tolls amount to approximately €15 (part of the A20 is toll-free in Lot). The journey takes 1h50 under normal conditions. The A20 flows freely outside holiday weekends, making it a pleasant and fast journey.
