Rocamadour is one of France's most vertiginous sites: a medieval city clinging to a cliff face above the Alzou canyon, on the Quercy limestone plateau. France's second most-visited site after Mont-Saint-Michel with 1.5 million visitors annually, Rocamadour has been a major pilgrimage destination since the 12th century. The city unfolds on three levels: the commercial lower town, the religious sanctuary in the middle (with its seven chapels including the Chapel of Our Lady housing the miraculous Black Madonna) and the castle at the summit. The Grand Stairway of 216 steps, which pilgrims once climbed on their knees, links the lower town to the sanctuaries. The sword Durandal, embedded in the rock according to the legend of Roland, adds to the mystery. 15 km northeast, the Padirac Chasm, an immense natural cavity 103 m deep with underground rivers navigable by boat, is the Lot's other wonder. Rocamadour cheese (AOP), a small creamy goat's-milk cabécou, is a gastronomic star of the Quercy. A taxi from Toulouse is ideal for a combined Rocamadour + Padirac day trip, without the stress of parking on this steep site.
Route
Route Toulouse → Rocamadour
From Toulouse, your driver takes the A62 towards Bordeaux to Montauban, then joins the A20 towards Cahors-Brive. The motorway crosses the Tarn-et-Garonne with its plum and apple orchards, then enters the Lot department. After Cahors, the landscape changes dramatically: the Quercy limestone plateaux unfold their arid expanses dotted with dry-stone walls, cazelles (stone huts) and truffle oaks. The Rocamadour exit (exit 54 or 56) leads via winding minor roads across the causse. The first glimpse of Rocamadour, from the l'Hospitalet viewpoint, is breathtaking: the city appears to hang from the cliff face. Tolls on the A62 and A20 total approximately €14. The journey takes 1h50 normally and can reach 2h20 in summer when the D32 approach road to Rocamadour is congested.

Specific tips for the Toulouse → Rocamadour route
Arrive early morning (before 10am) to avoid crowds, especially in July-August. The site is besieged between 11am and 4pm. Be dropped at l'Hospitalet at the top and descend by panoramic lift (€2.50) — far more pleasant than climbing from below. For the less mobile, a small tourist train connects the car park to the centre. The Padirac Chasm (15 km, open April to November) deserves 1h30: the underground river boat trip is unforgettable. Online ticketing is recommended as queues exceed 1h in summer. Combine both sites in one day with our hourly hire. For lunch, Jehan de Valon (terrace overlooking the canyon) or Le Beau Site in the city offer authentic Quercy cuisine: Lot foie gras, melted Rocamadour cabécou, Périgord walnuts.
