Mazamet is a town with a singular destiny, shaped by the wool-pulling industry — the art of separating wool from sheepskin. In the 19th century, this small Tarn town became the world's leading wool-pulling centre, importing skins from Australia, South Africa and Argentina to feed its factories along the Arnette river. The great Mazamet families (Cormouls-Houles, Olombel, Tournier) built sumptuous bourgeois mansions that give the town an unexpectedly prosperous air. But Mazamet's jewel is Hautpoul, a medieval village perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Arnette valley. Accessible via the spectacular Himalayan footbridge (140 m long, 70 m above the void), Hautpoul is a Cathar site destroyed in 1212 during the crusade. Now restored, the village hosts artisan workshops and a medieval festival. The Montagne Noire, peaking at Pic de Nore (1,211 m), offers beech and fir forests, hiking trails and welcome coolness in summer. Mazamet is also the gateway to the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park, a wild territory between the Tarn and Herault departments.
Route
Route Toulouse → Mazamet
From Toulouse, your driver takes the eastern ring road then the A68 motorway towards Albi. At the Castres interchange (exit 5), you leave the A68 for the D612 dual carriageway towards Castres and Mazamet. You first cross the Tarn plain with its cereal crops, then the landscape becomes undulating as you enter the Sor valley, a tributary of the Agout. Castres appears with its picturesque houses on the Agout. You cross the town then continue on the D612 towards Mazamet. The landscape changes dramatically: the first foothills of the Montagne Noire rise up, oak forests give way to beech and fir. Mazamet nestles in the Arnette valley, overlooked by the Hautpoul spur. Tolls are limited to the A68 section (approximately €4). The journey takes 1h10 under normal conditions. Crossing Castres can add 10-15 min during rush hours.
