Castres is a city of art and history on the banks of the Agout, a tributary of the Tarn. Its colourful houses hanging over the river recall Bruges and form the city's most photographed panorama. The Goya Museum, housed in the former episcopal palace, holds the largest collection of Spanish art outside Spain, with works by Goya, Velázquez and Murillo. Castres is also the gateway to the Sidobre, a granite massif unique in Europe where enormous boulders seem to balance precariously in the forest.
