Lourdes is the world's second-largest Catholic pilgrimage site after the Vatican, with over 6 million visitors annually. Since the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858, the Notre-Dame de Lourdes sanctuaries have welcomed pilgrims from around the world, including many sick or disabled people hoping for miraculous healing. The Grotto domain, with the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Rosary Basilica, the underground Basilica of Saint Pius X (seating 25,000), and the miraculous baths, forms a religious complex of extraordinary scale. Lourdes is also a gateway to the Pyrenees: the Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2,877 m, observatory with exceptional panorama), the Cirque de Gavarnie (UNESCO), and the spa towns of Cauterets and Barèges.
