Ax-les-Thermes is a millennial thermal resort nestled at the confluence of three Pyrenean valleys: the Ariege, Oriege and Lauze. Its 80 hot springs (up to 78C, the hottest in the Pyrenees) gush forth in the very heart of the town — the Bassin des Ladres, an open-air fountain where you can soak your feet for free, is the town's symbol. Ax's thermal history dates back to Roman times, but it was Saint Louis who in 1260 built a hospital for lepers returning from the Crusades, giving the resort its thermal vocation. Today, the Couloubret thermal baths offer treatments and a modern wellness area. But Ax is also a dynamic winter sports resort: the Ax 3 Domaines ski area peaks at 2,400 m with 80 km of varied pistes, from forest to windswept ridges. In summer, the upper Ariege valley is a hiking paradise: mountain lakes, chamois, marmots, Pyrenean flora. The Col du Puymorens (1,920 m), on the road to Andorra, and the Plateau de Beille (Nordic ski site and Tour de France stage) are accessible from Ax. Ariege gastronomy is hearty and mountainous: azinat (Ariege pot-au-feu), Bethmale cheese, millas, apple croustade.
Route
Route Toulouse → Ax-les-Thermes
From Toulouse, your driver takes the A66 towards Foix and Andorra. The motorway crosses the Volvestre plain then enters the Ariege department. After Pamiers, you reach Foix with its spectacular comtal castle perched on a rocky pinnacle. At the Foix exit, you leave the motorway for the N20 which climbs the Ariege valley. The national road, winding but well maintained, follows the river between limestone cliffs and beech forests. You pass through Tarascon-sur-Ariege (Niaux prehistoric caves, Prehistory park), then the valley narrows. The Pyrenees rise ever more impressively. After Luzenac (talc quarries, the largest in Europe), the valley opens onto the Ax-les-Thermes basin, dominated by snow-capped peaks in winter. Tolls are limited to the A66 section (approximately €6). The journey takes 1h35 under normal conditions. In winter (December-March), snow equipment (chains) may be needed on the final section — your driver is equipped.

The Couloubret thermal baths offer pools, hammam, sauna and treatments (entry ~€15, 2h). In winter, Ax 3 Domaines is 8 km from the centre (free shuttle): 37 pistes, 15 lifts, guaranteed snow thanks to altitude. In summer, the hike to the Fontargente lakes (2,200 m, 3h round trip) is a must: turquoise lakes in a granite cirque. The Ax market (Tuesday and Saturday) offers mountain cheeses, fir honey, charcuterie. The L'Orry le Saquet restaurant, perched at 1,400 m, serves mountain cuisine with panoramic views.
