Saint-Tropez and Nice are two absolute icons of the French Riviera, yet worlds apart in terms of accessibility. Saint-Tropez, the mythical Var peninsula made famous by Brigitte Bardot in the 1950s, deliberately remains off the beaten track with no railway station, no direct motorway and only narrow, winding roads threading through the Maures massif. It is this relative seclusion that has preserved the incomparable charm of this fishing village turned global jet-set hotspot, where magnificent yachts line the harbour and the place des Lices buzzes with legendary cafe life. Nice, by contrast, is the great Riviera metropolis with its iconic Promenade des Anglais, colourful Old Town, Matisse and Chagall museums, and an international airport serving over 120 destinations. The taxi journey between these two Riviera poles crosses stunning landscapes: Cotes de Provence vineyards around Ramatuelle and Gassin, the dense cork-oak and umbrella-pine forests of the Maures massif, and the red-rock Esterel range before joining the A8 motorway into Nice.
Route
Route Saint-Tropez → Nice
From Saint-Tropez, the route follows the D98A to the La Foux crossroads, then heads north on the D25 through the Maures massif via Cogolin and La Garde-Freinet, a perched village known for its chestnuts and cork. The climb offers spectacular panoramic views of the receding gulf below. At the summit, the road descends to the Argens valley and joins the A8 motorway at Le Muy. The motorway then heads east past Frejus, through the red Esterel gorges, past Cannes, Antibes and Cagnes-sur-Mer before arriving in Nice. The coastal alternative via Sainte-Maxime and Frejus offers beautiful sea views but adds considerable time, especially in summer.

Specific tips for the Saint-Tropez → Nice route
In July and August, traffic around Saint-Tropez is notoriously gridlocked. The D98A between the port and La Foux can turn a 10-minute stretch into an hour-long crawl. To avoid the worst, depart before 9am or after 7pm. The Maures massif route via La Garde-Freinet is generally smoother than the coastal road through Sainte-Maxime. If heading to Nice Airport, allow generous margins: up to 2 hours of travel time in peak season plus the recommended 2 hours before your flight. Book the day before, especially on summer weekends when demand surges.
