Fécamp is a historic port town on the Côte d'Albâtre (Alabaster Coast), between white chalk cliffs and grey sea. Once France's premier cod fishing port, Fécamp sent its 'Terre-Neuvas' fishermen to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and Iceland for centuries — a maritime saga recounted at the Pêcheries Museum, housed in a former cod-drying facility transformed into a remarkable contemporary museum. The Palais Bénédictine is Fécamp's emblematic monument: this extravagant neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance palace was built in 1882 by Alexandre Le Grand (a merchant, not the conqueror!) to house the distillery of the famous Bénédictine liqueur, reportedly based on a 16th-century Benedictine monk's recipe. The visit includes art rooms, the working distillery and a tasting. The Sainte-Trinité abbey church, as long as Notre-Dame de Paris (127 m), is one of Normandy's largest religious buildings.
